Verdict
Small SUV with a 423-litre boot, but only 3 stars at Euro NCAP (4 with the safety pack). Recalls for a fuel hose that may leak (fire risk) have affected several series: have a dealer confirm that the repair has been carried out. On the diesel, the particulate filter needs regular journeys on the road.

Known faults
Fuel hose (leak, fire risk)
Manufacturer recallThe Tivoli has been subject to several recalls related to the fuel supply. In Europe, vehicles built between July 2015 and January 2016 may leak from the fuel line (loss of power, smell of petrol) (What Car?, car-recalls.eu). In Korea, the 2020 recall covers Tivoli and diesel Korando models whose hose shows fine cracks, with a risk of fire; in Australia, a micro-crack can appear on the hose of 2015-2020 diesel Tivoli models (free recalls). Have a SsangYong dealer confirm that the recalls have been carried out on the vehicle.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Have a SsangYong dealer confirm, using the serial number, that the fuel hose recalls have been carried out.
- Check for a smell of petrol in the engine bay and watch for any loss of power during the test drive.
- Diesel: ask how the car was driven (regular road journeys), as the particulate filter needs to regenerate; check that the oil level does not rise.
- Manual gearbox: check that the gears engage without harshness (a selector problem is cited by CarGurus).
- Look at the underbody and the cabin plastics: some Tivoli cars have been used off-road and the plastics mark easily.
- Check the remaining warranty: before October 2018, the warranty was only five years.
Questions to ask the seller
- Were the fuel hose recalls carried out at a dealership? Do you have proof?
- For a diesel, what kind of journeys did the car make (road or town)?
- What is the date of first registration, and is there any manufacturer warranty left?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
