Verdict
Small, well-protected SUV (5 stars at Euro NCAP in 2012) with a 356 L boot. On the used market, servicing matters: the Takata driver airbag must be replaced on first-generation cars built from 2012 to 2015, the 1.6 CDTI's timing chain can fail, and owners report cooling system leaks. Check the recalls and the service history.

Takata driver airbag (recall)
Manufacturer recallIn June 2024 Opel launched a recall campaign for around 25,000 first-generation Mokka built from 2012 to 2015 in France, to replace the Takata driver airbag. The replacement is free at the dealer and takes about twenty minutes; the campaign was later extended to more than 53,000 Mokka, Astra and Vectra. Check with the serial number that the airbag has been replaced.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Enter the VIN in Opel's tool, or ask a dealer, whether the Takata driver airbag has been replaced (cars built 2012 to 2015).
- Check the coolant level and condition, the expansion tank (cracks) and for leak traces under the engine.
- 1.6 CDTI diesel: listen to the cold start; a rattle can indicate a stretched timing chain.
- Test the Start-Stop system and the Intellilink multimedia screen.
- Ask for the service book and invoices, especially for any work on the cooling system or the timing.
Questions to ask the seller
- Was the driver airbag replaced under the Takata recall? Do you have proof of the work?
- Have there been coolant leaks, and have the expansion tank or water pump been replaced?
- For the diesel: has the timing chain been checked or replaced, and do you have the invoices?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
