Verdict

Buy with care

Family SUV with a 514 L boot, rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2017, but a cousin of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008: it inherits the serious faults of the 1.2 PureTech (timing belt), the 1.5 diesel (timing chain) and the battery recalls on the plug-in hybrid versions. A complete service history and a check of the recalls are essential.

Known faults

Degraded “wet” timing belt (1.2 PureTech)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.2 PureTech, the timing belt runs in oil and can disintegrate. Its debris clogs the oil strainer, causing oil pressure to drop, which can destroy the engine. Stellantis extended the belt warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, subject to servicing conditions, and introduced a new-generation belt in June 2022. On the Grandland X, a recall targeted cars built between March 2017 and April 2018: the belt teeth could wear prematurely, with a risk of timing slip at high speed.

Premature wear of the timing chain (1.5 BlueHDi)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5), the timing chain can stretch prematurely because of oil carbonisation; the first sign is a rattle on cold start. A break can damage the engine. Vehicles built between 6 December 2017 and 31 January 2023 are subject to a recall.

High-voltage battery recalls (plug-in hybrids)

Manufacturer recall

Several recall campaigns have targeted the traction battery of plug-in hybrid Grandland X built between 2019 and 2022, due to a fire risk: the battery can overheat, as the battery management software does not detect every fault. Another recall concerns water ingress that could corrode the battery casing. The corrections are carried out at the workshop: insist on proof that all the campaigns have been completed on the vehicle.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask for service invoices: oil changes at the correct interval with the recommended oil, and belt monitoring on the 1.2 petrol.
  • Check the oil level when cold and ask whether topping up is needed between oil changes (1.2 petrol).
  • Ask an Opel dealer, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out and whether the engine warranty extensions apply.
  • 1.5 diesel: listen to the cold start; a rattle can indicate a slack timing chain.
  • Plug-in hybrid: insist on proof that the high-voltage battery recalls have been carried out, and check that charging works.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have all the service invoices, with the oil references used?
  • Has the timing belt (petrol) or the chain (1.5 diesel) been checked or replaced?
  • Have the manufacturer's recalls, including the battery recall on the hybrids, been carried out?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
