1.8 DI-D 150

  1. Piston rings clogged with soot (1.8 DI-D)

    Manufacturer recall

In Australia, Mitsubishi recalled around 1,588 ASX models fitted with the 4N13 1.8 diesel in 2013: soot can block the rings in their grooves, the pistons can overheat and melt, and the engine can stall without being able to restart. The fix is a software update taking about 20 minutes (Carsguide). The sources cited are Australian: have a French Mitsubishi dealer check, using the serial number, whether the campaign has been carried out.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

  2. Particulate filter clogged by short journeys (diesel)

    Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The diesel's particulate filter only regenerates when driven far enough. A Polish buyer's guide advises extending the journey when a regeneration is under way, otherwise the filter becomes more and more clogged. A British owner reports filter problems and high fuel consumption caused by not driving long enough trips.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
