Buy with care

McLaren's Sports Series range: 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 540 to 600 hp, seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, rear-wheel drive. Specialists mainly describe electronics and maintenance faults (battery draining, IRIS system, hydraulics, door hinges), but several safety recalls have targeted these models (braking, fuel, cooling). Check them with the VIN and have a pre-purchase inspection carried out by a McLaren specialist.

Known faults

Accumulator pressure loss and hydraulic leaks

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Foreign Automotive explains that the hydraulic accumulator, which controls gear changes and nose lift, loses its nitrogen preload with age and heat; preventive replacement is advised for 570S cars that have not had it done, as the failure is sudden (the car no longer shifts gears). Friends Car Rental lists hydraulic leaks (hoses, seals) among the known faults of the 570S and estimates the repair at between 1,500 and 15,000 AED (UAE dirhams, not euros).

Cooling fluid connectors that harden

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Foreign Automotive reports that the first quick-release cooling connectors harden and crack over time (slow coolant loss, sweet smell, puddle), and that a leak detected too late can lead to engine repair. Friends Car Rental also mentions coolant leaks on the 570S, with a risk of overheating and costly engine damage.

Cracked door hinges

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Friends Car Rental says the hinges on the gull-wing doors can crack on the 540C, 570S and 570GT (repair costs 7,500 to 10,000 AED per side, UAE dirhams), and that a completely failed hinge could allow the door to come off. Thorney Motorsport (via Foreign Automotive) also mentions hinge replacements on the 570S, while noting that this does not establish a failure rate for the whole range.

Battery draining while parked

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Foreign Automotive presents the 570S as the most common case of a car that will not start anymore after a few weeks of standing: the original battery can go flat in two weeks, and a deep discharge can cause several modules to lose their calibration, which then have to be recoded. Automonitor confirms that the 570S and 570GT have not resolved this parasitic drain problem. A maintenance charger is recommended as soon as the car is parked.

IRIS infotainment system faults

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Foreign Automotive describes faults on the IRIS 2 that are more annoying than serious: dead pixels, Bluetooth disconnections, SD card reader problems, loss of GPS and occasional reboots, often resolved by a software update or by replacing a component. Friends Car Rental mentions frozen or black screens, and screens stuck in a reboot loop, on the 540C, 570S, 650S and 720S.

Recall: brake banjo bolt without fluid passage (US)

Manufacturer recall

McLaren recalled certain 2020 570S, 2019 600LT and other models in the United States: the brake banjo bolt may lack the holes that carry fluid to the caliper, which could cause loss of braking at one wheel and a car that pulls to one side (NHTSA, recall 21V561, 19 vehicles). Dealers inspect and replace the bolt free of charge.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: foam pad under the fuel tank (570GT)

Manufacturer recall

The NVH foam pad placed under the fuel tank can trap moisture and corrode the tank, with a risk of fuel leakage and fire (NHTSA, recall 20V231, notably 2017 to 2019 570GT). Dealers remove the pad, inspect the tank and replace it if corroded, free of charge.

Recall: coolant leak (600LT)

Manufacturer recall

On certain 2019-2020 600LT coupés and Spiders, the seal between the temperature sensor housing and the external radiator hose can leak into the engine bay, with a fire risk on contact with hot components (NHTSA, recall 23V484). The hose, housing and clamp are replaced free of charge.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: misrouted brake lines (600LT)

Manufacturer recall

The brake lines on certain 600LTs may be misrouted and cause the brake to act on the wrong side, which can lock a rear wheel and cause loss of control (NHTSA, recall 25V216, opened April 2025). Dealers check and correct the connections free of charge.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€227
Insurance€274

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the recalls (braking, fuel, cooling) and whether they were carried out checked with McLaren using the VIN (NHTSA; Foreign Automotive).
  • Require a pre-purchase inspection by a McLaren specialist: hydraulic pressure test, IRIS diagnostic and reading of stored fault codes from all modules (Foreign Automotive).
  • Test both doors and their hinges: play, creaking, cracks near the mounting points (Friends Car Rental).
  • Check for leaks (coolant, gearbox cooler, sills) and whether a maintenance charger has been used (Foreign Automotive).
  • Examine the front spoiler and bumper: chips, cracks, signs of repair, signs of use without nose lift (Foreign Automotive).
  • Check the service book for the annual services, including the 6th (fuel filter and canister), the one most often forgotten (Foreign Automotive).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have all the McLaren recalls been carried out? Can you provide the proof?
  • Have the hydraulic accumulator and the dampers been replaced or serviced, and when?
  • Does the car have a complete service book, including the six-year service, and has it been driven on a track?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
