Verdict

Buy with care

Large 7-seat 4x4 whose reliability Autocar rates as "sketchy" (108th in the 2016 Driver Power survey). The sensitive points are the air suspension and, on the diesel V6, a risk of crankshaft failure documented by manufacturer bulletins. Only buy one with a complete history and an inspection by a specialist.

Known faults

Crankshaft failure (main bearing shells) on diesel V6

Severity 3/3 · Serious

Land Rover issued service bulletins (2014 and 2016) on the rotation or incorrect positioning of the main bearing shells on diesel V6 engines: a seized crankshaft, engine to be replaced. Autocar notes that detection is difficult and that a more pronounced rattle at idle may be an early sign. Some engines are affected at low mileage, others exceed 300,000 km (forum).

Air suspension compressor and springs

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Air suspension is the most cited weak point: a faulty compressor (Land Rover bulletin LTB00420 for 2010-2012 vehicles, body cannot be raised) and leaking springs. AutoPartsPro places compressor failures between 60,000 and 90,000 miles and a complete replacement at more than £2,500.

Faulty crankshaft position sensor (2016 recall)

Manufacturer recall

A 2016 recall covers Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 built between April 2012 and May 2013 (Australia): a badly made crankshaft sensor can cause the engine to stall, with loss of braking and steering assistance. Similar recalls have been published in China, Brazil and Italy.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Land Rover Discovery”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€251
Insurance€70
Maintenance€38
Depreciation€135
Total per month€494

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€251

TDV6 3.0 245 ch version: combined consumption of 9.3 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

9.3 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €251

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€70

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Check the air suspension: body height the same on both sides, no sagging after a few hours parked, no warning message on the dashboard.
  • Listen to the diesel V6 when cold and at idle: any abnormal knocking or rumbling is grounds for rejection.
  • Have the Land Rover dealership check (with the chassis number) that the recalls, including the crankshaft sensor one, have been carried out.
  • Require a complete service book (regular oil changes); Autocar recommends a full history or an independent specialist.
  • Have the electronics diagnosed with a diagnostic tool: cruise control, infotainment, electric parking brake (faults reported by What Car?).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the air suspension compressor or springs already been replaced? Do you have the invoices?
  • Has the crankshaft sensor recall (3.0 TDV6) and the engine bulletins been dealt with by Land Rover?
  • Has there been any abnormal engine noise or work on the bottom end of the engine?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Parts and maintenance

Compare prices of parts for the Land Rover Discovery IV (L319) (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Land Rover Discovery 4 reliable?

Autocar describes a "sketchy" reliability record, and the model only reaches 108th place in the 2016 Driver Power survey. The most cited faults are the air suspension and, on the diesel V6, the crankshaft.

What Euro NCAP rating does the Discovery 4 have?

We found no Euro NCAP test of the Discovery 4 itself. Buyacar and Carbuyer cite 4 stars, but Carbuyer notes that the Discovery was last tested in 2006, so under the previous generation (Discovery 3), with a less demanding protocol than today.

What is the boot capacity of the Discovery 4?

Caradisiac gives 543 litres for the 7-seat version (2,558 litres at most); the listing does not specify the measurement method.
