Verdict

Good choice, check first

A large 7-seat people carrier measuring 5.22 m, the European version of the Chrysler Grand Voyager rebadged as a Lancia, sold only with a 6-speed automatic gearbox: a 2.8 Multijet diesel (163 then 178 hp) or a 3.6 V6 petrol producing 283 hp. It scored 4 stars at Euro NCAP in 2011 (weaker pedestrian and child protection). Owner opinions are mixed, particularly regarding the automatic gearbox, and fuel consumption is high (7.9 L/100 km combined for the diesel, 10.8 for the V6 according to the technical data sheets): prefer a car with a documented service history.

Automatic gearbox: jerking and reported replacements

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Some owners describe a sluggish automatic gearbox, with abrupt gear changes and slipping at around 85-95 km/h (forum thread where the torque converter or a sensor is suggested as the cause, with reading of fault codes recommended) and one isolated case of the gearbox being replaced at 89,000 km (Caradisiac review). Other owners have reported no problems: these are individual accounts, not statistics.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Take an extended test drive with gear changes at low and medium speeds (around 90 km/h): listen for jerking, slipping or the engine warning light.
  • Have the gearbox and engine fault codes read with a diagnostic tool.
  • Ask for the service invoices, including the timing belt.
  • Try all three rows of seats and the folding of the rear benches.
  • Have the chassis number checked with a dealer for any recalls (no recall specific to this model was found).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the automatic gearbox ever been repaired or replaced, and at what mileage?
  • Can you provide the service and timing belt invoices?
  • Has the engine warning light ever come on, and what diagnosis was made?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
