Verdict

Buy with care

Large 7-seat people carrier rated 5 Euro NCAP stars in 2015, whose boot reaches 300 litres in seven-seat configuration. It has been the subject of recalls for the 12 V battery (fire risk) and the rear suspension arm bolts, and the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel requires monitoring of its timing belt. Have the campaigns checked against the serial number and require consistent servicing.

Known faults

Wet timing belt of the 2.0 EcoBlue

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 2.0 EcoBlue, the timing belt works in oil. According to Dayco (cited by Autobiz), dilution of the oil by diesel is not uncommon and can degrade the belt; in extreme cases, fragments can clog the oil pump pickup. CarChecker recommends, for the Galaxy, checking before purchase whether the belt has been replaced.

Defective injectors on the 2.0 EcoBlue (2019 batch)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Ford identified a batch of high-pressure injectors that did not meet its quality requirements, fitted to 2.0 EcoBlue engines built between 25 February and 13 September 2019; the Galaxy is among the models listed. Symptoms: misfires and reduced performance. Affected vehicles are dealt with by a Ford dealership.

12 V battery leak: overheating and fire risk

Manufacturer recall

In 2019, Ford recalled around 322,000 Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy vehicles built between February 2014 and February 2019: acid could leak near the negative terminal of the starter battery and disable the battery monitoring sensor, with a risk of overheating. The fix involves fitting an intermediate cable with a fuse at the dealership.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Corroded rear suspension arm bolts

Manufacturer recall

Ford campaign 20S75 concerns Galaxy models built between 20 January 2015 and 18 February 2020: the original rear suspension arm bolts are prone to corrosion and can fail, impairing steering control and increasing the risk of an accident. The recall does not cover every vehicle from this period: check with the serial number at a dealership.

Particulate filter that may crack on the 2.0 EcoBlue (recall 24E06)

Manufacturer recall

Recall 24E06 covers the particulate filter of Ford EcoBlue diesels, which can crack and cause the soot emission limit to be exceeded at the MOT test. Car-recalls.eu indicates Galaxy production concerned from 23 July 2019 to 3 June 2024; the ÖAMTC also lists the Galaxy 2.0 EcoBlue. Check with the serial number.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have a Ford dealership check, using the serial number, that the campaigns have been carried out: 12 V battery, rear arm bolts (20S75) and, on EcoBlue engines, the particulate filter (24E06).
  • 2.0 EcoBlue diesel: ask for proof that the timing belt has been checked or replaced, and make sure there is no smell of diesel in the oil.
  • 2019-built diesel: make sure there are no misfire or loss-of-power symptoms pointing to the batch of defective injectors.
  • During the test drive, listen to the rear suspension and check the steering behaviour.
  • Require a complete service book, preferably from Ford, with detailed invoices.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recall campaigns (battery, rear suspension arms, particulate filter on diesel) been carried out? Do you have the documents?
  • For an EcoBlue diesel: has the timing belt been checked or replaced, and when?
  • Do you have all the service invoices, with dates and mileage?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
