Verdict

Good choice, check first

Italian compact (type 844) sold in France from 2008 to 2014 according to CarVerif, rated five stars by Euro NCAP in 2008. Owner feedback on the mechanics is generally good, but the recurring weak point is the electronics (CAN network, body computer, dual-zone air conditioning). On the 1.6 Multijet, watch the EGR valve and the DPF. The Lancia network is small, so a full electronic check at purchase is essential.

Known faults

Electronics: CAN network and body computer

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Lancia Club describes frequent faults in the CAN network and in the body computer (Body Computer): functions that disappear, error messages, and warning lights that come on for no reason, often caused by poor connector contact. On French forums, owners report power cuts and random warning lights, sometimes linked to the battery or an earth connection. The sources are mostly forums.

Dual-zone air conditioning: blend door actuator

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Lancia Club cites failures of the blend door actuator and of the dual-zone automatic air conditioning, whose diagnosis requires removing a large part of the dashboard. On a Lancia forum, one case of heating stuck at maximum on the driver's side after a clicking noise is attributed to a blend door actuator. On a Matmut forum, an owner mentions a known problem on the Delta, with 7 to 8 hours of labour according to him.

1.6 Multijet: clogged EGR valve and DPF

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

CarVerif reports a tendency for the EGR valves of the 1.6 Multijet 120 to clog, which can cause acceleration problems. IEMS lists the EGR valve and the DPF among the weak points of the 1.6 Multijet 120 engine, the DPF being especially affected by short journeys (regeneration requires trips of more than 20 km at sustained speed).

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€155
Insurance€64
Maintenance€24
Depreciation€47
Total per month€290

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€155

1.4 T-Jet 120 version: combined consumption of 6.3 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

6.3 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €155

Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€64

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Depreciation€47

Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the car read with a diagnostic tool: stored faults in the CAN network, the body computer and the air conditioning.
  • Test the dual-zone air conditioning: different temperatures on the left and right, hot and cold air on both sides.
  • Check the condition of the battery and alternator: power cuts and random warning lights are often linked to them.
  • 1.6 Multijet diesel: ask for the usage history (short town trips?), and check there is no engine warning light or loss of power (EGR, DPF).
  • Test every electrical item (windows, locking, wipers, radio, screen) and note any error messages on the instrument cluster.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have any electrical faults or intermittent warning lights occurred, and how were they repaired?
  • Has the air conditioning or heating already been repaired (blend door actuator)?
  • For a diesel: what type of journeys does it do, and has the DPF or EGR valve been cleaned or replaced?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
