Verdict
Compact (saloon and Touring Sports estate) rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2013. Reliability depends on the engine: the 1.8 HSD hybrid is described as the best choice, while the D-4D diesels are the weak points (oil consumption, EGR valve on the 1.6). Apart from the diesels, owners say they are satisfied according to L'argus.

Oil consumption of the D-4D diesels (1.4 and 2.0)
Severity 3/3 · SeriousL'argus describes abnormal oil consumption (more than 0.5 litres per 1,000 km) on the 1.4 D-4D up to the end of production, with an engine to replace in serious cases, and a piston ring and piston problem on the 2.0 D-4D up to a certain chassis number. Caradisiac reports heavy oil consumption on the diesels, which can reach 2 litres per 1,000 km; Fiches-auto cites it as the most frequent problem of the 1.4 D-4D.

EGR cooler and valve of the 1.6 D-4D (BMW origin)
Manufacturer recallThe EGR cooler of the 1.6 D-4D can leak over time, generating deposits in the EGR module and the intake manifold. Toyota launched a recall in France for vehicles built between April 2015 and May 2018, including the Auris II (L'argus). L'argus also cites the 1.6 D-4D EGR valve as a weak point in its reliability review.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €96 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €63 |
| Maintenance | €38 |
| Depreciation | €128 |
| Total per month | €325 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€96
1.8 HSD hybride 136 version: combined consumption of 3.9 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
3.9 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €96
Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€63
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€38
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€128
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Favour the 1.8 HSD hybrid; be wary of D-4D diesels without a complete maintenance history.
- Diesel: check the oil level when cold and ask whether topping up is needed between oil changes.
- 1.6 D-4D: ask whether the EGR cooler recall has been carried out (serial number on the Toyota website).
- Check with the serial number whether any recall campaigns are open on the Toyota France website.
- Check the condition of the rear discs and pads, and test starting after a few days standing.
Questions to ask the seller
- Does the engine consume oil, and how often do you top it up?
- Have the manufacturer's recalls (EGR on the 1.6 D-4D, other campaigns) been carried out at Toyota?
- Do you have the maintenance invoices, especially for the brakes and the battery?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
