Verdict

Extra caution

Compact rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2008 (3 then 4 stars in the new 2014 test, with stricter criteria). According to L'argus, not all of its engines were faultless: the 1.2 TCe 115 combined oil consumption and power loss, while the naturally aspirated 1.6 16V remains the most reliable petrol engine. On the 1.5 dCi, check the timing belt history.

    Petrol · Manual · 110 hp · 6.9 L/100 km · Crit'Air 2

Naturally aspirated petrol at launch (2008-2012), described by L'argus as the most reliable petrol engine in the range, adequate for relaxed drivers but a little short on acceleration. Replaced by the 1.2 TCe 115 in 2012.

  • TCe 130 (1.4)

    Petrol · Manual · 130 hp · Crit'Air 2

    Petrol · Manual · 115 hp · Crit'Air 2

1.2 turbo introduced with the 2012 facelift in place of the 1.6 16V. L'argus judges it disappointing and reports cases of oil consumption and power loss.

Known faults

1.2 TCe oil consumption that can lead to engine failure

Severity 3/3 · Serious

L'argus reports that the Mégane III suffered problems with the 1.2 TCe 115 (loss of power, oil consumption): repairs range from reprogramming to replacing the lower engine block, or even the whole engine. Autocopilot attributes this oil consumption, up to 1 litre per 1,000 km, to poorly designed piston rings and cites the Mégane III among the affected models; the 2019 recall does not cover every vehicle.

Premature timing belt failure (1.5 dCi 110)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

L'argus lists a workshop action from April 2013 covering 1.5 dCi 110 engines built from 1 September 2009 to 31 October 2010 (49,734 vehicles, including Mégane III). Mégane III owners from 2010 describe belts breaking at around 70,000 km, well before the service interval, with the engine needing replacement.

EDC gearbox failures (control unit or dual clutch)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On EDC Mégane III vehicles, owners describe jerking, a clutch that slips when pulling away with the message "gearbox to be checked", gear skipping or reverse no longer engaging. The repairs cited range from reprogramming to replacing the dual clutch (around 1,000 euros) or the gearbox control unit (1,537 euros billed by Renault in one case).

Loss of brake assistance (1.2 TCe, 2012 recall)

Manufacturer recall

On Mégane III vehicles with the 1.2 TCe (H5Ft) engine built up to 18 August 2012, the brake pedal can become hard due to lack of assistance when the car slows or stops several times on a slope with the engine idling. According to Auto Bild, the injection computer does not generate enough vacuum for the brake booster; Renault reprograms this computer in the workshop during the recall.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€170
Insurance€60
Maintenance€37
Depreciation€75
Total per month€342

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€170

1.6 16V 110 version: combined consumption of 6.9 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

6.9 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €170

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • 1.2 TCe: check the oil level, ask whether the car uses oil and whether the control unit has been reprogrammed; demand the maintenance invoices.
  • 1.2 TCe built before 18 August 2012: have a Renault workshop check, using the serial number, that the braking assistance recall has been carried out.
  • 1.5 dCi 110 from 2009-2010: require proof that the timing belt has been replaced.
  • Mégane built in June-July 2009: check that the brake pedal weld inspection (2009 recall) has been carried out.
  • EDC gearbox: look for jerking, slipping when pulling away and the message "gearbox to be checked" during the test drive.
  • Diesel: listen for any turbo whistle, and watch for black smoke and injection warning lights during the test.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have the maintenance invoices, including the latest timing belt replacement?
  • Does the car use oil between oil changes, and have the manufacturer's recalls been carried out?
  • Have the EDC gearbox or its control unit already been repaired or replaced?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Renault Mégane III reliable?

L'argus notes that not all of its engines were faultless: the 1.2 TCe 115 combined oil consumption and power loss, and the dCi engines had oil pump problems, with the 2.0 dCi seeming less affected. The naturally aspirated 1.6 16V remains the most reliable petrol engine.

What is the boot capacity of the Mégane III?

According to L'argus, the saloon's boot reaches 405 L including the storage under the floor, made possible by the absence of a spare wheel. The Estate offers 524 L under the parcel shelf and up to 1,595 L with the rear seats folded, according to Planète Renault.

What Euro NCAP rating did the Mégane III get?

Five stars in 2008, with 37 points out of 37 for adult protection. Retested in 2014 with stricter criteria, it only obtained three stars, due to its safety equipment, then four stars at the end of the year after an improvement.
