Verdict
Urban SUV with a 352-litre boot. Euro NCAP gave it 3 stars in 2017, and 5 stars only with the optional driver assistance pack: check that the car you are looking at has it. According to CarVerif, the 120 hp 1.0 T-GDi has more reported faults than the 100 hp (the clutch in particular), and 1.6 CRDi cars built in 2019-2020 are subject to a tandem pump recall.

Known faults
1.0 T-GDi clutch
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOn the 1.0 T-GDi, the clutch is the most frequently reported fault in Fiches-auto's owner reviews (small sample). CarVerif mentions a clutch that is sometimes weak, with a combined risk to the clutch, turbo and coils on the 120 hp beyond 120,000 km. These are owner reports, not manufacturer statistics.

1.6 CRDi tandem pump: manufacturer recall
Manufacturer recallA recall concerns the tandem pump of Kia 1.6 CRDi engines, which the Stonic was built with between 2019 and April 2020 (ÖAMTC gives 26.08.2019 to 14.04.2020; CarVerif gives 26 June 2019 to 14 April 2020). A design fault in the internal filter can, in the worst case, reduce braking assistance. The dealer removes the filter and replaces the pump and the belt if necessary. Eligibility can be checked using the serial number.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

| Fuel or electricity | €135 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €70 |
| Maintenance | €34 |
| Depreciation | €170 |
| Total per month | €409 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€135
1.0 T-GDi 100 version: combined consumption of 5.5 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
5.5 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €135

Things to check
- Have the recalls carried out checked at a Kia dealer using the serial number (tandem pump on 2019-2020 1.6 CRDi).
- Check the driver assistance pack (emergency braking, lane keeping) is fitted: it is what gives the 5 Euro NCAP stars.
- Test the clutch when cold and warm: juddering when pulling away, slipping point, pedal feel.
- Listen to the 1.0 T-GDi 120 on a cold start: CarVerif reports noisy timing chain tensioners, especially before 2019.
- Ask for the service book and invoices, in particular for the clutch and timing belt.
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the tandem pump recall (1.6 CRDi) been carried out? Do you have the certificate?
- Has the clutch already been replaced, and at what mileage?
- Is the car fitted with the driver assistance pack (automatic emergency braking)?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
