Verdict

Good choice, check first

Saloon rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2015 and named best in its class (large family cars) that year. The point of vigilance is the 2.0 Ingenium diesel, whose timing chain is documented as fragile. Insist on proof of servicing and, if possible, a car dated after the timing chain service at the end of 2019.

Known faults

Timing chain of the 2.0 Ingenium diesel

Severity 3/3 · Serious

The 2.0 Ingenium diesel in the XE is described by several specialist sources and forums as prone to timing chain wear: a metallic noise on cold start, camshaft fault codes, and a chain located at the rear of the engine that requires removing the gearbox to reach it. The sources mention a chain service at the end of 2019 (forum); check whether the chain has already been replaced.

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€175
Insurance€100
Maintenance€41
Depreciation€140
Total per month€456

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€175

2.0 essence 200 ch version: combined consumption of 7.1 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

7.1 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €175

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Diesel: listen to a cold start (metallic chain noise) and have the engine fault codes read.
  • Diesel: ask whether the timing chain has been replaced and with which part (service at the end of 2019).
  • Check the engine oil level and condition, with oil change invoices.
  • Check the complete service book, preferably within the Jaguar network or with a specialist.
  • Test the infotainment screen and the dashboard.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the timing chain been replaced? Do you have the invoice?
  • What is the date of first registration (before or after the end of 2019)?
  • What is the main use (short or long journeys) and how often were oil changes done?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
