Known faults

Timing chain of the 2.0 Ingenium

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Carwow cites timing chain and oil pump failures among the known problems of the E-Pace's 2.0 Ingenium engines. Autocar says a rattle on cold start in a used diesel may signal a worn chain, which can stretch and break, causing engine failure; dealers can fit an improved chain. Autopartspro recommends frequent oil changes to prevent this fault.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask for the complete service history: regular oil changes and any timing chain replacement with an improved chain.
  • Cold start: listen for any rattle from the 2.0 engine (timing chain).
  • Diesel: check the condition of the particulate filter (Autocar reports clogged DPFs).
  • Long test drive, including cold and town driving, to detect jerky automatic gear changes.
  • Test the infotainment screen (freezes, smartphone connection) and open and close the tailgate several times (Autocar reports weak struts).
  • Have the brake hoses checked by a Jaguar dealer (Autocar reports rubbing on early models).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the timing chain been replaced or upgraded? Do you have the invoice?
  • What is the oil change interval, and are all oil changes recorded in the service book?
  • Have the software updates been carried out at Jaguar?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
