Verdict

Good choice, check first

Urban SUV rated 4 Euro NCAP stars in 2015, with a 350 L boot. Used-car sites flag the 1.4 MultiAir as one to watch (hydraulic module, turbo) and the 1.6 MultiJet diesel as exposed to EGR, particulate filter and clutch issues. A test drive both cold and hot, and a recall check, are essential.

Known faults

MultiAir hydraulic module and turbo (1.4 MultiAir)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The MultiAir module controls valve opening via oil pressure. Fiches-auto describes the 1.4 MultiAir 140 hp as the most sensitive engine in the 500X and the most frequently reported fault; Carverif recommends checking the hydraulic module and the turbo, and Caradisiac reports problems from as early as 50,000 km. Symptoms described: irregular idle, misfires and an engine warning light.

Recall: brake pedal that may sink (1.5 Hybrid)

Manufacturer recall

An impact can disengage the brake pedal arm and its lever, which can cause the pedal to sink under braking. The recall concerns 500X mild hybrids built between 20 July 2023 and 27 June 2024; the pedal is reinforced at an approved workshop. Check with the serial number.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Try the engine cold, then hot: irregular idle, misfires or an engine warning light can signal a fault in the MultiAir module (1.4).
  • DCT gearbox: test it both cold and hot, including at low speed.
  • Diesel 1.6: check the clutch, the history of particulate filter/EGR problems and the usage (urban or mixed).
  • 2023-2024 hybrid: have the brake pedal recall checked against the serial number to confirm it has been carried out.
  • Check for rust, the sealing of the panoramic roof and the correct operation of the touchscreen.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the MultiAir module, the turbo or the clutch been replaced? Do you have the invoices?
  • Have the manufacturer's recalls been carried out at Fiat?
  • How was the car used (urban, mixed), and was the servicing done within the network?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
