Verdict
Front-engined GT convertible with a retractable hard top (14 s) powered by a 600 hp 3.9 twin-turbo V8, raised to 620 hp on the 2020 Portofino M, which has an 8-speed gearbox. Auto Express rates reliability as generally very good, and PistonHeads found no reliability problems. The main things to check are the battery, the roof and the safety recalls (braking for all cars, driveshaft bolts on some 2023 Portofino Ms), with a pre-purchase inspection by a Ferrari specialist.

Known faults
Discharged or failing battery
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingAuto Express lists battery failure among the most common problems, especially on cars driven little, even when a trickle charger is used. PistonHeads reminds readers that a dead battery leaves a rarely used exotic car immobilised, and considers a trickle charger almost essential. Exotic Car Hacks reports Portofino owners who have had to replace the battery several times in a short period.

Retractable hard top: sensors and mechanism
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingAuto Express describes a very complex roof mechanism that is generally reliable, but whose sensor faults can prevent the roof from being raised or stowed correctly: try it several times. Exotic Car Hacks reports roof mechanism problems on the Portofino, less frequent than other faults.

Recall: brake fluid leak (reservoir cap)
Manufacturer recallThe brake fluid reservoir cap may not vent properly and can create a vacuum in the reservoir, leading to a leak that could cause partial or total loss of braking (NHTSA, recall 22V536, Portofino 2019-2022). Dealers replace the cap and add a low brake fluid level warning, free of charge. Auto Express confirms this recall, dated February 2022, for the Portofino and the Portofino M.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: driveshaft bolts not tightened (Portofino M 2023)
Manufacturer recallFerrari recalled four vehicles in total, including some 2023 Portofino Ms (along with F8 Spiders and Roma Spiders), whose driveshaft bolts may not have been tightened during production and could loosen, with a risk of loss of traction and control (NHTSA, recall 24V810, Ferrari RC 88). Dealers check the bolts and retighten them free of charge.

Manufacturer recalls
See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Ferrari Portofino / Portofino M”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.
Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €263 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €417 |
| Maintenance | €198 |
| Depreciation | €2,069 |
| Total per month | €2,947 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€263
Portofino 3.9 V8 600 DCT 7 rapports version: combined consumption of 10.7 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

Inspection checklist
Ferrari Portofino / Portofino M F164 — inspection checklist
Things to check
- Have a Ferrari dealer check with the VIN that the brake fluid reservoir cap recall (22V536) has been carried out; for a 2023 Portofino M, also the driveshaft bolt recall (24V810) (NHTSA).
- Test the battery and ask whether a trickle charger was used (Auto Express, PistonHeads).
- Open and close the roof several times, with the car stationary, to detect a sensor fault (Auto Express).
- Check the original options (Magneride, parking cameras, Apple CarPlay), which Auto Express considers desirable.
- Ask for the service history (12-month or 12,500-mile interval according to Auto Express) and a pre-purchase inspection by a Ferrari specialist.
Questions to ask the seller
- Have the safety recalls been carried out by the Ferrari network? Can you prove it with the VIN?
- Has the battery been replaced, and was the car connected to a trickle charger?
- Has the roof already required work, or shown an error message?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
