Verdict

Buy with care

Supercar with a naturally aspirated 4.3-litre V8 producing 490 hp (510 hp for the 430 Scuderia and Scuderia Spider 16M), as a coupé or Spider, with a manual or F1 robotised gearbox. Buying guides rate the engine as robust, but cite exhaust manifolds that crack, the F1 gearbox clutch and its hydraulic pump, and the Spider convertible hose recall covering cars up to 2007. A pre-purchase inspection by a Ferrari specialist is essential.

Known faults

Cracked exhaust manifolds

Severity 3/3 · Serious

Evo cites manifold cracking as the only engine problem encountered by a Ferrari dealer, with cases where a broken manifold caused engine failure by sucking in weld debris; a new manifold costs more than 4,000 pounds fitted, and some specialists repair them by welding. Petrolicious notes that late models received a modified system, but that no F430 is immune. Foreign Automotive describes cracks that show up as a tick or hiss on cold start, then an engine warning light, and puts replacement at 3,000 to 6,500 dollars.

Wear of the F1 gearbox clutch

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On the F1 gearbox, the clutch wears like a manual's and depends heavily on driving style. Evo estimates the average life at 25,000-30,000 miles and replacement at about 2,500 pounds, closer to 4,500 pounds with the thrust bearing and flywheel; Petrolicious suggests about 15,000 miles; Foreign Automotive sees clutches worn out between 15,000 and 30,000 km and puts the job at 4,500 to 7,000 dollars.

F1 gearbox hydraulic pump and actuator

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Petrolicious asks for the F1 gearbox oil to be changed every three years, failing which the pump and actuator can be damaged, and notes that a modified pump has been fitted to all cars from late 2006. Foreign Automotive describes the pump and accumulator ageing (slow or jerky shifts, gearbox warning light, pump running almost continuously) and a car sometimes immobilised. Evo advises looking for seepage from the actuator and indicates replacement around 5,000 pounds.

Worn suspension ball joints and links

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Evo considers the suspension ball joints the weak point: knocking over bumps and, in advanced cases, steering that no longer centres; a dealer can now replace the ball joints alone for about 600 pounds. Petrolicious says bearings, bushes and dampers wear regularly, with very expensive original parts, and Foreign Automotive cites bushes, ball joints and tie rods wearing, with knocking and vague steering.

Spider: convertible hydraulic hoses and fire risk

Manufacturer recall

NHTSA recall 09V-048 covers about 1,950 F430 Spiders of model years 2005 to 2007: engine heat can crack the convertible hydraulic hoses, and the leak can, if not repaired, reach the engine bay and cause smoke and fire. The remedy is free fitting of heat shields. Petrolicious reports the same recall for Spiders built up to 2007 and notes that it did not cover all countries.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€450
Insurance€92
Maintenance€178
Depreciation€1,300
Total per month€2,020

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€450

F430 Berlinetta V8 4.3 F1 version: combined consumption of 18.3 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

18.3 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €450

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the exhaust manifolds examined by a specialist (ticking or hissing when cold, engine warning light): a broken manifold can destroy the engine (Evo, Foreign Automotive).
  • On an F1, ask for the clutch wear record and the date of the last gearbox oil change; look for seepage from the actuator under the car (Evo, Petrolicious, Foreign Automotive).
  • On a Spider up to 2007, check that the convertible hydraulic hose recall has been carried out (heat shields) (NHTSA, Petrolicious).
  • Listen for suspension knocking over bumps and check that the steering centres (Evo).
  • Check the date and cost of the last timing chain service, to be checked at 43,000 miles according to Evo.
  • Have the condition of the carbon-ceramic discs checked if fitted: very expensive to replace (Evo).

Questions to ask the seller

  • What is the clutch condition (diagnostic reading), and has the F1 gearbox had its oil changed every three years?
  • Are the exhaust manifolds original, or have they been replaced or repaired?
  • For a Spider, has the convertible hose recall been carried out?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
