Verdict
Front-engine grand tourer with a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 producing 800 hp and 718 Nm, a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and rear-wheel drive, in coupé form (812 Superfast) or as a hardtop convertible (812 GTS). The 812 Competizione and the Competizione A, special series with 830 hp, are very rare variants. The 812 models were subject to three safety recalls listed by the NHTSA (fuel vapour separator, rear window, brake fluid reservoir cap), to be checked against the chassis number. A pre-purchase inspection by a Ferrari specialist remains essential.

Known faults
Recall: cracked fuel vapour separator
Manufacturer recallFerrari recalled certain 2018-2019 Ferrari 812 Superfast cars (along with other models) because the fuel vapour separator can crack and let fuel leak, which can increase the risk of fire in the presence of an ignition source (NHTSA, recall 19V090). The dealer replaces the part free of charge.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: poorly bonded rear window
Manufacturer recallOn certain 2018-2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast cars (1,063 vehicles affected in the United States), the rear window may have been poorly bonded, which can reduce its adhesion over time until it detaches and creates a hazard on the road (NHTSA, recall 20V614). The dealer replaces the window free of charge.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: brake fluid reservoir cap
Manufacturer recallNHTSA recall 22V536 covers, among others, 2018-2022 Ferrari 812 cars: the brake fluid reservoir cap may not vent properly, creating a vacuum in the reservoir and causing a fluid leak that can lead to partial or total loss of braking. The dealer replaces the cap and updates the software to add a low brake fluid warning message, free of charge.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Check with the chassis number, at a Ferrari dealer, that recalls 19V090 (fuel vapour separator), 20V614 (rear window) and 22V536 (brake fluid reservoir cap) have been carried out (NHTSA).
- Ask for the complete service history: the 812 GTS benefits from a 7-year maintenance programme (Sports-cars.fr), to be confirmed for the specific car.
- Check the condition of the carbon-ceramic brake discs and tyres, as well as the operation of the dual-clutch gearbox.
- On an 812 GTS, test the hardtop roof through several opening and closing cycles.
- Have a pre-purchase inspection carried out by a Ferrari dealer or an independent specialist.
Questions to ask the seller
- Have the safety recalls (fuel vapour separator, rear window, brake fluid reservoir cap) been carried out? Can you provide proof?
- Is the service history complete within the Ferrari dealer network, and is the maintenance programme or a warranty transferable?
- Have the carbon-ceramic brakes and tyres been replaced, and at what mileage?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
