Known faults

Degraded 'wet' timing belt (1.2 PureTech)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.2 PureTech, the timing belt runs in oil and can break down. Its debris clogs the oil strainer, which causes oil pressure to drop and can destroy the engine. Stellantis extended the belt warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, subject to servicing conditions, and introduced a new-generation belt in June 2022.

Premature wear of the timing chain (1.5 BlueHDi)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.5 BlueHDi, the 7 mm timing chain can wear prematurely and, if it breaks, the engine can stop abruptly. The C4 SpaceTourer and C4 Picasso are among the Citroën models concerned by campaign NJ4 (reinforced 8 mm chain if wear is found, otherwise an oil change with suitable oil and a software update). Production dates concerned vary between sources: check the serial number with a Citroën dealer.

Flywheel and clutch wear (1.6 e-HDi 115)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Caradisiac reports a few cases of failed flywheels and clutches on the 1.6 e-HDi 115, which must be replaced, while noting that this remains rare. Testimonies of worn-out clutches on 1.6 HDi engines also appear on Fiches-auto.

ETG6 automated-manual gearbox: jerking and slowness (1.6 e-HDi 115)

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The ETG6 automated-manual gearbox is judged slow in town by L'argus, and Fiches-auto reports noticeable torque interruptions. Owners report jerking and knocking on gear changes, sometimes persisting after a reset at the dealer.

Cracked particulate filter (2.0 BlueHDi, recall)

Manufacturer recall

Citroën recalled C4 Picasso II and C4 SpaceTourer cars fitted with the 2.0 BlueHDi built from 1 December 2017 to 18 February 2021 because of a risk of particulate filter cracks. According to L'argus, a reprogramming is enough in most cases; some vehicles require a check, or even replacement of the filter.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Citroën C4 Picasso”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€100
Insurance€82
Maintenance€30
Depreciation€80
Total per month€292

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€100

BlueHDi 120 version: combined consumption of 3.7 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

3.7 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €100

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€82

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Depreciation€80

Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Demand service invoices: oil changes at the correct interval with the recommended oil, and belt checks (PureTech).
  • Check the oil level when cold and ask whether oil needs topping up between changes.
  • Ask a dealer of the brand, with the serial number, which recalls have been carried out and whether the car is eligible for the warranty extensions.
  • 1.5 or 2.0 BlueHDi diesel: have the dealer check, with the serial number, whether the chain work (1.5) or the particulate filter work (2.0) has been carried out.
  • ETG6 automated-manual gearbox: extended test in town to detect jerking, knocking or slowness on gear changes.
  • 1.6 e-HDi 115 diesel: check the clutch (biting point, vibrations) and ask whether it has already been replaced.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have all the service invoices, with the oil references used?
  • Has the timing belt (PureTech) or the chain (1.5 BlueHDi) been checked, and have the recall operations been carried out?
  • Has the clutch or the automated-manual gearbox already been repaired or replaced?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
