Engine recall: connecting rod failure on the 160 hp 1.5 Hybrid
Manufacturer recallIn 2026, Stellantis recalled about 33,300 Tonales fitted with the 160 hp 1.5 hybrid engine because of an abnormal combustion problem that can deform or even break a connecting rod; in the worst case, a fire risk is mentioned. The remedy is a free software update. L'Argus notes that Alfa Romeo does not specify what will happen if the connecting rods are already damaged.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: brake pedal fault
Manufacturer recallA European alert concerns Tonale hybrids and plug-in hybrids whose brake pedal assembly can cause a sudden loss of braking. The repair, covered by the manufacturer, consists of reinforcing the pedal arms. The affected build dates vary by source (Leocare: January to July 2023; Rapex alert: 20 July 2023 to 24 September 2024).

Recall: loose battery cables (plug-in hybrid)
Manufacturer recallOn the Tonale plug-in hybrid, the positive 12 V battery cable and/or a high-voltage connector may have been poorly tightened at the factory, with a risk of overheating and fire. In the United States, the recall covered vehicles built between December 2022 and August 2023; a 2023 European alert covers vehicles built between September 2022 and August 2023.

Inspection checklist
Alfa Romeo Tonale I — inspection checklist
Things to check
- Ask an Alfa Romeo dealer, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out (1.5 160 hp engine, brake pedal, plug-in battery cables).
- Ask for the repair orders proving that each recall was carried out.
- Test the multimedia screen and driver assistance: owners report error messages and screen freezes.
- Plug-in Q4: ask for the charging history and check the real electric range on a test drive.
- Listen to the engine when cold and at idle, and check the service invoices.
Questions to ask the seller
- Have the 1.5 160 hp engine recall and the brake pedal recall been carried out? Do you have the proof?
- Have electronic faults or driver-assistance messages been dealt with at the workshop?
- For the plug-in: has the battery been charged regularly, and is the original charging cable supplied?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
