Verdict

Good choice, check first

An electric SUV, the twin of the Toyota bZ4X, rated five stars by Euro NCAP in 2022 and again in 2025, with a 441-litre boot. It has been the subject of safety recalls: wheels that can come loose (2022-2023) and, in 2026, battery control unit software that can cut drive power. Its fast charging is considered disappointing. Check that the recalls have been carried out.

  • 73.1 kWh 338 ch intégrale (restylage 2026)

    Electric · Automatic · 338 hp · Crit'Air green

2026 facelifted version: 252 kW (338 hp), 73.1 kWh battery, still all-wheel drive. More recent, and therefore rarer on the used market.

Known faults

Disappointing fast charging

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

A heise test measured a power of around 60 kW at the start, rising to 105 kW, followed by a sharp drop beyond 80% charge. Some owners also report fast-charging sessions that fail to start or are interrupted, the cause (car or charger) remaining debated.

Wheels that can come loose (wheel hub bolt recall)

Manufacturer recall

As on the Toyota bZ4X, the wheel bolts could loosen, with a risk of a wheel detaching when cornering sharply, braking hard or accelerating. The repair consists of replacing the wheels and hub bolts. Subaru reissued a recall (1,182 vehicles from 2023 in the United States) because some repairs under the first recall had been done incorrectly. Check with the serial number that the recall work has been done.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Battery control unit software (2026 recall)

Manufacturer recall

A June 2026 recall concerns battery control unit software that can cause the electric drive system to shut down, with loss of drive power while driving; power steering and power brakes remain active. It targets 2025-2026 Solterras (around 4,757 vehicles in the United States, 395 in Australia); the fix is a free software update at a dealership. These figures do not directly concern France: check with a Subaru dealership.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask a Subaru dealership, using the serial number, for the list of recalls carried out: wheel bolts and, for 2025-2026 cars, the battery control unit software.
  • Check that the battery management software updates have been installed (an update was announced during the first tests).
  • Carry out a fast-charging test on a DC charger to check how the session starts and the power delivered.
  • Ask for the real range observed in use: a winter test measured around 240 km, well below the 466 km WLTP figure.
  • Check the wheel size: 20-inch wheels give a lower WLTP range (416 km).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the wheel recall (hub bolts) been carried out? Can you prove it?
  • Have the software updates and the battery control unit recall been completed?
  • What real range do you get, and does fast charging work without interruption?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
