Buy with care

Double-cab 5-seat pick-up launched in France in 2018 with a single engine, the 2.2 e-XDi of 181 hp, with a 6-speed manual or Aisin automatic gearbox, later joined by a Grand version with a long load bed. Little reliability data has been published; the only documented fault is a recall for the cooling fan fuse, issued in Australia (2020-2024 models), to be checked with a dealer. The Musso has not been tested by Euro NCAP.

Known faults

Recall: cooling fan fuse

Manufacturer recall

An Australian recall (REC-006327, 2025) concerns 15,284 Musso and Rexton cars from 2020-2024: a manufacturing defect can blow the cooling fan fuse, leading to engine overheating and a sudden loss of power, with an increased risk of collision. The repair is free at a dealership. We found no equivalent recall in France: check the serial number with the network.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Insurance: average for a closely related model (other generation or same platform).
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Maintenance: budget of a closely related model.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Check with a SsangYong dealer, using the serial number, whether the cooling fan fuse recall applies.
  • Check correct engagement of 4x4 (low-range gear and differential lock) during the test drive.
  • Automatic gearbox: extended test drive, cold then warm, to detect jerks or noises.
  • Examine the load bed and towing points: signs of heavy use, deformation, condition of the hitch.
  • Check the service book and invoices.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the vehicle been used for towing or work (building sites, trailer)?
  • Have the brand's recalls and campaigns been carried out at a dealership?
  • Has the 4x4 system or the gearbox (manual or automatic) been repaired?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Parts and maintenance

Compare prices of parts for the SsangYong Musso II (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.
