Verdict
Diesel 4x4 pick-up with a load bed (2007-2018), offered with a 141 or 155 hp 2.0 and later a 178 hp 2.2. Little reliability data is published; the only documented fault is a recall of the front suspension ball joints, which a dealer should check before any purchase. The model was not tested by Euro NCAP.

Known faults
Front suspension ball joints (recall)
Manufacturer recallThe ball joints of the front suspension lower arms can be damaged; if they break, there is a risk of accident (Australian recall in 2015 for Actyon Sports built before January 2008). In South Korea, a 2014 recall covered the ball joints of four models including the Actyon Sports built between June 2005 and November 2010, with a risk of the wheel separating from the axle. Free repair was offered at SsangYong dealers at the time: have the serial number checked.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Have a SsangYong dealer check whether the front suspension ball joint recall has been carried out (serial number).
- Check the front suspension play and noises during the test drive, especially under braking and when turning.
- Ask for invoices for the diesel engine and 4x4 transmission servicing (including gearbox oil change).
- Check the engine power stated (141, 155 or 178 hp) on the registration document.
- Inspect the load bed and chassis (professional use, towing loads).
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the front suspension ball joint recall been carried out? Do you have the proof?
- Has the pick-up been used for towing or for professional purposes?
- What servicing has been done on the engine and transmission, and where?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
