Verdict

Good choice, check first

Compact that is very well protected (5 stars Euro NCAP in 2019) with a 467 L boot. The faults reported are mainly electronic (multimedia screen), but several recalls affect 2019-2020 examples (eCall, seat covers and side airbags, 1.0 TSI injectors): check them by serial number.

Seat cover and side airbag recall (2019 Scala)

Manufacturer recall

The seat cover stitching can be defective and impair the protection of the side airbags, increasing the risk of injury in an accident. The recall (Škoda code 74D7) concerns Scalas built from February to September 2019.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

eCall recall (2019 Scala)

Manufacturer recall

The software of the eCall emergency call module does not meet the specifications, and the button may not work. The recall (European Rapex alert of March 2021) concerns Kamiqs and Scalas built in August and September 2019.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

1.0 TSI injector recall

Manufacturer recall

An injector with too high a leak rate can let fuel into the combustion chamber, and the vehicle no longer meets legal pollutant limits. The recall concerns the three-cylinder 1.0 TSI built between 2018 and 2020 (Škoda campaign 24FQ according to Au7o); the dealer replaces the injectors.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€133
Insurance€89
Maintenance€38
Depreciation€200
Total per month€460

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).
  • Insurance: brand average, as no average is published for this model.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€133

1.0 TSI 110 version: combined consumption of 5.4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

5.4 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €133

Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€89

Depreciation€200

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Enter the serial number (VIN) at a Škoda dealer to confirm the recalls (eCall, seat covers, 1.0 TSI injectors).
  • Test the multimedia screen at length: slowness, freezing, restarts, and operation of the eCall system.
  • 1.5 TSI: start and drive when cold, at low revs, to detect jerks.
  • DSG gearbox: try it at low speed and in manoeuvres.
  • Ask for the service book and invoices.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the manufacturer's recalls (eCall, seat covers, 1.0 TSI injectors) been carried out? Do you have the proof?
  • Has the multimedia screen already been repaired or updated under warranty?
  • Do you have the complete maintenance invoices?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
