Verdict

Good choice, check first

Urban SUV rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2019, with a 400-litre boot. A European recall concerns the seat covers of some examples built in 2019 (side airbags), and the What Car? survey places the Kamiq toward the bottom of the small SUV rankings. The main things to check are the history of the 1.0 TSI and the behaviour of the DSG7 gearbox.

Known faults

Jerky gear changes of the dry-clutch DSG7

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Used-car guides report on the dry-clutch DSG7 (DQ200) jerks when pulling away, hesitation during manoeuvres or irregular gear changes; a guide places these often between 50,000 and 100,000 km and states that a control unit update and an oil change can help. A car that shudders or shows a flashing gear without a written diagnosis should be ruled out.

Misfires and cut-outs of the 1.0 TSI at low speed

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The Carverif guide recommends looking for misfires, engine or EPC warning lights and cut-outs at low speed on the 1.0 TSI. One owner of a 2019 1.0 TSI 116 hp describes an engine that cut out at low speed three times in three years, and What Car? cites the engine and fuel system among the reported faults.

Defective seat cover stitching (recall, side airbags)

Manufacturer recall

On Kamiqs built between July and September 2019, the seat cover stitching can be defective, which can impair the operation of the side airbags in an accident (Rapex alert of March 2020, Škoda recall code 74D7). The recall does not concern every vehicle: have the serial number checked at a dealer.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Faulty eCall module (recalls)

Manufacturer recall

A software fault in the eCall communication module can prevent the emergency call button from working (European alert of 2021). What Car? mentions two eCall recalls: one for software on cars built between 10 July 2019 and 7 February 2020, the other for replacing the connectivity unit on cars built from late August to mid-September 2019.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the recalls (seat covers, side airbags) and eCall checked by serial number at a Škoda dealer.
  • 1.0 TSI: ask for the fault codes to be read and check that there is no engine or EPC warning light and no cut-out at low speed.
  • DSG7: manoeuvre and pull-away test; refuse a car that shudders, hesitates or shows a flashing gear.
  • Test the multimedia screen and the emergency call (eCall) button.
  • Ask for the service book and maintenance invoices (including oil change and DSG gearbox oil).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recalls (seat covers, eCall) been carried out at Škoda? Do you have proof?
  • Has the engine or the DSG gearbox ever shown a warning light, a cut-out, or been diagnosed at a workshop?
  • Does the car have a complete service book?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Parts and maintenance

Compare prices of parts for the Škoda Kamiq I (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.

Insure the car

Insurance prices vary widely from one model to another: get a quote before signing.
