Verdict
Family saloon rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP (2015) with a large boot. On the used market, the 1.6 dCi calls for caution: a fragile turbo reported by several sites and a risk of engine failure acknowledged by Renault on a limited series. Reserve it for examples with a complete service history, and check the EDC gearbox on a test drive.

Known faults
Cracked crankcase-cylinder of the 1.6 dCi
Severity 3/3 · SeriousAccording to L'argus, a manufacturing defect in the crankcase-cylinder of the second-generation 1.6 dCi can crack it: abnormal noise, oil leak, stalling while driving, coolant consumption. An internal document cited by L'argus limits the defect to 1,474 units in France (built from 10 December 2014 to 19 March 2018). In April 2019, Renault opened a special technical operation (not a recall) covering engine replacement outside warranty.

1.6 dCi turbo failure
Severity 2/3 · CostlyThe 1.6 dCi turbo is cited as a weak point: whistling, loss of power or an engine warning light. Oscaro puts a turbo failure at 1,500 to 2,000 euros for parts and labour. CarVerif, whose audit covers a small sample of 14 cars, found seven cases between 70,000 and 130,000 km.

EDC gearbox: leaks and faults
Severity 2/3 · CostlyFiches-auto lists oil leaks, jerks, slipping and premature clutch wear among the possible EDC faults, with a possible switch to limp mode. CarVerif found oil leaks on 8 Blue dCi 200 between 70,000 and 110,000 km (about 1,600 euros on average, small sample) and faulty EDC gearboxes on some 1.6 dCi.

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €105 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €82 |
| Maintenance | €35 |
| Depreciation | €123 |
| Total per month | €345 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (diesel)€105
dCi 130 version: combined consumption of 3.9 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
3.9 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €105
Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€82
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€35
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€123
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist
Renault Talisman I — inspection checklist
Things to check
- Engine cold: listen for turbo whistling, and look for oil leaks, smoke and loss of power (1.6 dCi).
- Have Renault check, using the serial number, whether the 1.6 dCi engine is eligible for engine replacement coverage.
- EDC gearbox: test it cold and warm; refuse any jerks, slipping or gearbox warning light; ask for the gearbox oil change invoices.
- Demand the complete service book and any turbo or gearbox invoices.
- Check tyre wear and the condition of the rear suspension (reported by owners).
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the turbo or the EDC gearbox already been replaced or repaired? Do you have the invoices?
- Has the engine been replaced, or has the car benefited from Renault coverage?
- Has the automatic gearbox had oil changes, and at what mileage?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
