Known faults

Oil consumption of the early 1.2 TCe

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The 1.2 TCe (H5Ft) of the early Mégane IV can consume oil because of its piston rings: according to Car Verif, citing L'argus, engines built up to 11 May 2016 are affected. Que Choisir reports many cases on this engine, some leading to engine failure. Check the engine's manufacturing date and measure oil consumption.

Premature clutch wear (1.3 TCe with manual gearbox)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Out of 14 Mégane IV 1.3 TCe examined between 70,000 and 130,000 km, Car Verif found 7 clutches worn prematurely, at an average cost of 800 to 1,200 euros. On the Que Choisir forum, owners of manual 1.3 TCe models (Mégane 4, Scénic, Captur) describe a spongy pedal, friction and squealing when warm.

EDC gear selector knob cracking

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The release button on the EDC gearbox selector knob can crack and then break: it then becomes impossible to engage a gear and the car is immobilised. According to Motor1 (citing L'argus), Mégane 4 vehicles built before 11 May 2018 are affected; the only remedy is replacing the knob, which Renault agrees to do on request (no recall).

12 V battery and 12 V circuit of the plug-in hybrid

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

On the Mégane E-Tech plug-in, owners report repeated 12 V battery failures (the car will no longer unlock or start) and cuts in the 12 V circuit with a "Electrical fault" message, dealt with through software updates and battery replacement.

Maintenance€36
Depreciation€206
Total per month€460

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).
  • Insurance: average for a closely related model (other generation or same platform).
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • 1.2 TCe 130: check the engine's manufacturing date and measure oil consumption; demand the maintenance invoices.
  • Manual 1.3 TCe: check the clutch during the test drive (spongy pedal, friction, noise when warm).
  • EDC gearbox: the test drive should show smooth gear changes in town and under acceleration, with no jerks, delayed engagement or vibrations; check that the selector knob is not cracked.
  • Blue dCi: make sure no "Emissions system fault" message is displayed (Renault launched a catalytic converter replacement campaign) and that the AdBlue system works.
  • Test the R-Link 2 multimedia screen and all its functions.
  • Plug-in hybrid: check the 12 V battery, the charging and the absence of electrical warning messages.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have the service book and maintenance invoices, including any work carried out under warranty?
  • Have the clutch or gearbox (including the EDC selector knob) already been replaced?
  • Has a warning message (emissions, electrical fault) ever appeared?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Renault Mégane IV reliable?

Car Verif gives it a "GO under conditions" (6.5/10): the weak point is the early 1.2 TCe, and the EDC gearbox and R-Link 2 electronics should be tested. On the 1.3 TCe, Car Verif finds no serious engine failures but frequent premature clutch wear.

Which engine should I choose on a used Mégane IV?

The 1.3 TCe 140, a more torquey successor to the 1.2 TCe 130; Fiches-auto judges its EDC version "more than recommendable". For high mileage, the 1.5 Blue dCi 115 is available with a manual or 7-speed EDC gearbox. Avoid 1.2 TCe engines built before mid-May 2016.

What is the boot capacity of the Mégane IV?

384 L (VDA standard) for the saloon and 521 L for the Estate. The plug-in hybrid loses volume: 414 L in the saloon and 434 L in the Estate according to Automobile Propre.
