Verdict

Good choice, check first

Electric version of the 208 II, with a 265 L boot. Its documented weak point is the on-board charger of cars built up to the end of 2022, which can prevent AC wallbox charging; there is also a recall for unintended high-voltage cut-outs while driving, and stoppages linked to the 12 V battery. Check recalls, software updates and AC charging before buying.

Known faults

On-board charger failure (AC charging impossible)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The on-board charger supplied by Mahle can interrupt charging or refuse to start it: charging on a wallbox or socket (AC) becomes impossible, while fast DC charging remains possible. The fault also affects other Stellantis electric vehicles (e-2008, Corsa-e, etc.). According to Car Verif, 50 kWh e-208s built up to 1 November 2022 are affected. au7o estimates the replacement at between €2,200 and €3,800 at a dealer.

12 V battery: car no longer switches to “Ready”

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

The e-208 relies on its 12 V battery to wake the control units and allow it to start: a weak 12 V battery can immobilise the car even when the traction battery is charged. Owners describe a car that no longer switches to “Ready” mode; the workshop fix involves a check, a software update and replacing the 12 V battery if needed.

Unintended high-voltage cut-out while driving (recall)

Manufacturer recall

An overly sensitive high-voltage safety system can cut the power for no reason, causing a loss of power while driving, then prevent restarting for several minutes. Stellantis recalled e-208s for this fault: a software update is often enough, but the on-board charger or the DC-DC converter sometimes has to be replaced.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Test a full AC charge (if possible on a three-phase wallbox for the 11 kW option) and a DC fast charge.
  • Ask a Peugeot dealer, using the serial number, which recalls and campaigns have been carried out (high-voltage cut-out, on-board charger).
  • Check the production date: cars built up to 1 November 2022 are affected by the on-board charger fault.
  • Ask for a state-of-health (SOH) report on the traction battery.
  • Measure the 12 V battery voltage at rest and check that the car wakes up after being fully locked.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the on-board charger already been replaced or repaired? Do you have the invoices?
  • Have the recalls and software updates been carried out at Peugeot?
  • How old is the 12 V battery, and has the car ever been stuck without switching to “Ready”?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions

What range does a used Peugeot e-208 have?

On the WLTP cycle, 340 km for the 136 hp of 2019, 362 km after the 2022 update (Fiches-auto), and about 400 km for the 156 hp 51 kWh of 2023 (EVKX). Real-world range is lower, especially in cold weather.

Is the e-208's on-board charger reliable?

It is its main documented weak point: on cars built up to 1 November 2022, the Mahle charger can prevent AC charging. Test the charging and ask whether the charger has been replaced.

What is the Euro NCAP rating for the e-208?

4 stars: the rating obtained by the 208 in 2019 was extended to the electric version after additional Euro NCAP tests.
