Verdict

Good choice, check first

A compact premium SUV with very good crash protection (5 Euro NCAP stars in 2019, the best rating for a Land Rover at the time) and a 591-litre boot. Reliability data specific to this generation remains scarce; the 2019-2020 mild-hybrid versions were subject to a recall for a fire risk from the 48 V converter, to be checked with the serial number.

Known faults

Haldex all-wheel-drive clutch and pump

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The PistonHeads buying guide for the L551 reports Haldex pump failures; Au7o also ranks Haldex coupling failure among the most reported problems for the 2019 Evoque and notes that it requires regular fluid changes, which are often neglected. These are owner reports, not a statistic.

Recall: 48 V DC-DC converter on mild-hybrid versions

Manufacturer recall

Recall covering mild-hybrid (MHEV) Evoques of the 2019-2020 model years: a fault in the 48 V system can damage a converter component and short-circuit the 12 V circuit, with a battery warning light followed by a burning smell or smoke, and a fire risk. The figures (1,729 vehicles) are from the Australian campaign; the Brazilian press describes the same fault, corrected by a software update to the battery control. Check the serial number with the dealer network.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€146
Insurance€72
Maintenance€37
Depreciation€239
Total per month€494

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Insurance: brand average, as no average is published for this model.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€146

D150 MHEV AWD version: combined consumption of 5.4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

5.4 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €146

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€72

Depreciation€239

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the Land Rover dealer check, using the serial number, that the 48 V converter recall (2019-2020 mild-hybrid versions) has been carried out.
  • Ask for proof of Haldex clutch fluid changes and watch for any transmission message during the test drive.
  • Check the condition of the 12 V battery and the electrical functions: PistonHeads links electronic quirks to the battery.
  • Test the remote central locking, which is reported to sometimes fail.
  • Listen for suspension and interior trim noises during a test drive on rough roads.
  • Plug-in hybrid: check that charging works and the actual electric range.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the 48 V converter recall (2019-2020 mild-hybrid) been carried out? Do you have the dealer invoice?
  • Has the Haldex clutch fluid been changed, and when?
  • What is the servicing and battery history? Have any electronic faults been dealt with?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
