Verdict
Large saloon (then the Sportbrake estate from 2012) that received 4 stars from Euro NCAP. The documented faults are mainly electrical and related to the gear selector, but several recalls affect the fuel system (2010 V8, 2012-2013 2.2 diesel): check the VIN and the service history before buying.

Known faults
Jammed rotary gear selector
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingThe gear selector dial can stay pushed in when the ignition is switched on. In 2014 Jaguar issued software updates for the module on 2013-2014 XFs, and a module replacement if the fault persists (NHTSA bulletin). A specialist repairer describes the selector on the XF X250 as the most prone to failure.

EGR and particulate filter on the 2.2 diesel
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingOwners of the 2.2 diesel report EGR valve replacements (intermittent loss of power on a 2013 XF; valve and EGR cooler on another car); the Car Checker report also flags a risk of DPF clogging in short urban use.

Diesel leak recall on the 2.2 diesel (2012-2013)
Manufacturer recallIn 2013 Jaguar recalled 2.2 diesel XFs for a diesel leak at the injector return rail connection: fuel can reach the exhaust and turbo, with a risk of fire under the bonnet. A recall of XFs built between July 2012 and May 2013 also took place in China for the same engine.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €146 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €89 |
| Maintenance | €36 |
| Depreciation | €115 |
| Total per month | €386 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (diesel)€146
2.2 D 190 BVA8 version: combined consumption of 5.4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
5.4 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €146
Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€89
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€36
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€115
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist
Jaguar XF I (X250) — inspection checklist
Things to check
- Have the VIN checked at a Jaguar dealer for recalls (fuel on the 2010 V8 and 2012-2013 2.2 diesel).
- Switch the ignition on and off several times: the gear selector dial should pop out each time.
- Diesel: ask for the EGR/DPF invoices and make sure the car has not only done short urban journeys.
- Test the multimedia, warning lights and electrical accessories; look for signs of moisture under the seats and in the electrical box.
- Ask for the complete service history.
Questions to ask the seller
- Have all manufacturer recalls been carried out? Do you have the supporting documents?
- Has the gear dial, the EGR or the DPF been replaced or cleaned?
- What use has the car had (short trips or long road journeys), and where has it been serviced?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
