Verdict

Good choice, check first

Small SUV rated 4 Euro NCAP stars (2013), with a modest boot (334 to 356 L according to Parkers). The 1.0 EcoBoost, the most common engine, has a belt running in oil that needs close monitoring, and two recalls (fuel lines, rear suspension bolts) covered 2013-2014 examples. Carverif rates it 'buy with conditions' (5.5/10): a verifiable service history is required.

Known faults

Wet timing belt of the 1.0 EcoBoost

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The EcoSport's 1.0 EcoBoost uses a belt that runs in the engine oil. Parkers identifies it as the main concern: the official interval is 10 years or 100,000 miles, but many specialists advise changing it much earlier (five to eight years), for around 2,000 GBP. A degrading belt can lead to engine failure. In the United States, the NHTSA has extended its investigation of this engine to 2018-2021 EcoSport models; no equivalent European recall has been found. Require proof of replacement and a complete service history.

Recall of the rear suspension bolts (2013-2014)

Manufacturer recall

A recall concerned 633 EcoSports sold in France, produced in Chennai (India) between 29 November 2013 and 11 April 2014: the rear suspension arm bolts may have been overtightened. The bolts and nuts are replaced and retightened to the correct torque, in under 30 minutes according to L'Argus.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall of the fuel lines (1.0 EcoBoost 2013-2014)

Manufacturer recall

A recall covered 1.0 EcoBoost EcoSports produced between February 2013 and February 2014: the anti-corrosion coating on the fuel vapour lines did not comply, creating a risk of leaks. The lines must be replaced with modified parts. L'Argus notes that few vehicles are affected; Ford Austria had only 3. Check the work with the serial number at a Ford dealership.

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€143
Insurance€58
Maintenance€37
Depreciation€100
Total per month€338

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€143

1.0 EcoBoost 125 version: combined consumption of 5.8 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

5.8 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €143

Depreciation€100

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • 1.0 EcoBoost: require proof of the wet belt replacement (date and mileage) and all service invoices.
  • Have a Ford dealership check, using the serial number, that the recalls (fuel lines, rear suspension) have been carried out.
  • Check the oil pressure, the cooling circuit, and the absence of an oil warning light or past overheating (Carverif's advice).
  • 1.5 PowerShift: extended test drive of the gearbox, looking for jolts.
  • Test the side opening of the boot and the tailgate's hold, which loads from the kerb side (Parkers).

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the wet timing belt of the 1.0 EcoBoost been replaced? When, at what mileage, and with which invoice?
  • Have the Ford recalls (fuel lines, rear suspension) been carried out?
  • Has the car ever overheated or shown an oil pressure warning light?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
