Verdict

Good choice, check first

Electric city car with a 185 L boot, offered with either a 24 kWh battery (190 km WLTP) or a 42 kWh battery (around 300 km WLTP). It achieved 4 Euro NCAP stars in 2021. The documented faults are mainly electronic: 12 V battery discharge and error messages, often resolved by software updates at dealerships. Reliability data remain scarce; require a state-of-health report for the traction battery and verification of software updates.

Known faults

12 V battery discharging (car no longer starts)

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Several sources report rapid discharges of the 500e's 12 V battery, often linked to electronic modules waking up: the car may then fail to start or unlock. Owners cite a software update carried out as a recall that solved the problem, or a faulty component (Uconnect unit battery, 12 V monitoring sensor). Remedies mentioned: updating the body control module, or a replacement AGM battery.

Electronic and software bugs (error messages, disabled systems)

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Owners report intermittent error messages, disabled functions and problems with the Uconnect multimedia system; these are usually dealt with by software updates at dealerships, though they do not always disappear (resets reported to have no effect). A review on Fiches-auto describes a car immobilised at 18,000 km despite several updates. Carverif notes the electrical systems as the car's weak point.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have a Fiat dealership check, using the serial number, the recalls and software updates carried out.
  • Ask for a state-of-health (SOH) report for the traction battery.
  • Measure the 12 V battery voltage and check that the car starts and unlocks after several days standing.
  • Have the fault codes read and test the Uconnect screen, looking for any error message or disabled function.
  • Test an AC charge and a DC fast charge (50 kW for the 24 kWh, 85 kW for the 42 kWh).
  • Check the range shown on the dashboard after a full charge, version by version.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the 12 V battery already been replaced, or has the car ever refused to start?
  • Which software updates and recall campaigns were carried out at the dealership? Do you have the repair orders?
  • Can you provide a report on the traction battery's state of health and say where it was usually charged?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
