  1. Recall: brake fluid reservoir cap

    Manufacturer recall

A 2022 US recall (NHTSA 22V536) covers in particular the 2012–2016 Ferrari FF: the brake fluid reservoir cap may vent poorly, creating a vacuum and a leak that can cause partial or total loss of braking. Dealers replace the cap and add a low-level warning message, free of charge. CarsCounsel recommends making sure this recall has been carried out.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

  2. Airbag recalls (passenger inflator, driver module)

    Manufacturer recall

Several official US recalls affect the FF's airbags: passenger inflators that may burst in a crash on 2012 and 2013 models, then 2014–2016 models; a driver airbag module poorly assembled on 2015 models built from 19 December 2014 to 29 April 2015, which could deploy with the steering wheel turned. The remedies are free: check each recall against the serial number with the Ferrari network.

  3. 4WD front transfer box (PTU)

    Severity 2/3 · Costly

Autocar describes the PTU, which controls the four-wheel-drive system, as prone to failure through fluid ingress, typically caused by a faulty casing seal; around £30,000 to replace, and around £10,000 at a specialist who repairs and improves it. ItalPassion calls it the most fragile part, with leaks or failures that can cost up to €30,000 for a full replacement. CarsCounsel says the PTU is prone to failure if engine oil leaks from the rear crankshaft seal, and that the repair often requires removing the engine. Have the PTU inspected by a specialist before buying.

  4. Dual-clutch gearbox: leaks and sensors

    Severity 2/3 · Costly

Autocar reports that the dual-clutch gearbox can leak and have sensor problems, often requiring a rebuild or even a replacement. ItalPassion considers it reliable but notes that sensors and oil leaks can require costly repairs. CarsCounsel mentions sensors and hydraulic components that can fail with mileage, and abrupt gear changes or warning lights that should be diagnosed without delay by a specialist.

  5. Lithium battery sensitive to inactivity

    Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Autocar warns that the lithium battery, costly to replace, can die on a car left standing (with obscure fault codes), and must be kept on a maintenance charger. CarsCounsel says a voltage drop while the car is parked can permanently damage it, and ItalPassion notes that batteries and electronics are sensitive to periods of inactivity.

Price and diagnose repairs

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
