Verdict

Good choice, check first

Budget people carrier with 5 or 7 seats, with a 827 L boot in 5-seat configuration, which Caradisiac considers reliable thanks to its simple design and proven mechanics. Its safety is weak: only 3 stars at Euro NCAP in 2012, with ESP optional at launch. The 1.2 TCe 115 should be avoided (oil consumption and engine failures); the 1.5 dCi is the choice recommended by Car Verif, Fiches-auto and L'argus.

Which version to choose

Versions to favour: 1.5 dCi 90, 1.5 dCi 110.

  • 1.6 MPI 85

    Petrol · Manual · 85 hp · Crit'Air 1

Entry-level petrol engine at launch: pleasant in town but lacking low-down pull on the road, noisy above 110 km/h and hard to bring below 9 L/100 km according to L'argus. Replaced in early 2014 by its LPG version, with no price increase.

  • 1.6 MPI 85 GPL

    Petrol · Manual · 85 hp · Crit'Air 1

Petrol and LPG bi-fuel version of the 1.6 MPI 85, launched in France in January 2014 to replace the petrol 1.6 MPI 85; its two tanks give more than 1,000 km of range according to La Tribune Auto.

  • 1.6 SCe 100

    Petrol · Manual · 102 hp · Crit'Air 1

1.6 naturally aspirated with 102 hp (75 kW), in the 2017 facelift range; according to Le Journal de l'Automobile, the Lodgy's LPG offer then uses this engine.

  • 1.2 TCe 115

    Petrol · Manual · 115 hp · Crit'Air 1

1.2 turbo (H5F) with 190 Nm, more torquey and more economical than the 1.6 according to L'argus, but judged catastrophic for reliability by Fiches-auto (oil consumption that can lead to engine failure).

    Engine: Renault-Nissan 1.2 TCe / DIG-T (H5Ft, HRA2DDT)

Verdict on this engine: Buy with care

  • 1.3 TCe 130

    Petrol · Manual · 130 hp · Crit'Air 1

1.3 TCe with particulate filter, co-developed with Daimler, introduced in 2019 with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

    Engine: Renault-Nissan-Mercedes 1.3 TCe / DIG-T (H5Ht, HR13DDT, M282)

Verdict on this engine: Good choice

  • 1.5 dCi 90

    ✓ Recommended

    Diesel · Manual · 90 hp · 4.2 L/100 km · 109 g CO₂/km · Crit'Air 2

1.5 dCi (K9K) with 200 Nm, the choice recommended by L'argus for its flexibility and reasonable consumption; it does however lack resources at full load according to Fiches-auto.

Engine: Renault 1.5 dCi / Blue dCi (K9K)

Verdict on this engine: Buy with care

  • 1.5 dCi 110

    ✓ Recommended

    Diesel · Manual · 110 hp · Crit'Air 2

1.5 dCi (K9K) with 240 Nm, the version to target according to Fiches-auto, where owners give it 14.7/20.

Engine: Renault 1.5 dCi / Blue dCi (K9K)

Known faults

Oil consumption and failure of the 1.2 TCe 115

Severity 3/3 · Serious

Car Verif calls for maximum vigilance on the Lodgy's 1.2 TCe (H5F): oil consumption, piston ring defects and risk of engine failure. Fiches-auto, based on owner feedback, considers its reliability catastrophic and advises avoiding it, engine failure being the most cited fault. Owners report a loss of compression in two cylinders at 72,000 km, or a burst valve followed by excessive oil consumption before failure; one of them notes the absence of an oil level alert.

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€113
Insurance€49
Maintenance€32
Depreciation€135
Total per month€329

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€113

1.5 dCi 90 version: combined consumption of 4.2 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

4.2 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €113

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • 1.2 TCe 115: ask for the service invoices and the history of oil top-ups, measure oil consumption and carry out a compression test; if in doubt, prefer a 1.5 dCi.
  • 1.5 dCi: check there is no engine or particulate filter warning light, and have the EGR valve and the particulate filter diagnosed if the car has mostly been driven in town.
  • Check that the car has ESP, which was only optional at launch in 2012.
  • Lodgy built between 4 April and 28 August 2018: have a Dacia dealership confirm that the driver's airbag recall has been carried out.
  • 7-seat version: check the presence and correct operation of the removable third row.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have the service invoices, with the dates and mileage of the oil changes?
  • Do you need to top up the oil between oil changes, and how often?
  • Has the car been driven mostly in town or on the road?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dacia Lodgy safe?

This is its weak point: Euro NCAP only awarded it 3 stars in 2012, with 72% for adult occupant protection, 77% for children, 44% for pedestrians and 29% for safety assist. ESP was only offered as an option at launch.

Which engine should I choose for a used Lodgy?

The 1.5 dCi: L'argus recommended the dCi 90 and Fiches-auto rather advises the dCi 110. Car Verif rates it as more recommendable than the 1.2 TCe 115, provided the EGR valve, the particulate filter and the service history are checked. Fiches-auto advises avoiding the 1.2 TCe for its reliability.

What is the boot capacity of the Lodgy?

According to L'argus and the Dacia catalogue: 207 L in the 7-seat configuration, 827 L in 5-seat configuration with the third row removed, and up to 2,617 L in 2-seat configuration, loaded up to the roof.
