Verdict

Good choice, check first

Coupé or convertible with a 405 hp 6.2 V8, sold in Europe from 2011 to 2015 with a 6-speed automatic gearbox according to the technical data sheets, for 13.1 l/100 km and 304 g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle. Two points require vigilance: the ignition key recall (2010-2014 models) and the AFM lifters reported by owners on the V8 of automatic versions. No Euro NCAP rating found.

Known faults

Faulty AFM lifters (6.2 L99 V8, automatic)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On Camaro SS models with the automatic gearbox and the 6.2 L99 V8, the lifters of the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system are reported to possibly stick or collapse, causing misfires, valve train noise and sometimes damage to the camshaft (au7o.io). Owners describe lifter replacements on L99 engines, including a 2015 model (Camaro5). The sources are mainly testimonies from the United States: to be checked by a specialist.

Ignition key can leave the “run” position (recall)

Manufacturer recall

The driver’s knee can strike the key fob and move the key out of the “run” position, which shuts off the engine and removes power steering and power brake assistance. GM recalled the 2010-2014 Camaros in 2014 (NHTSA recall 14V346000, including exports): the key is replaced by a standard key with a separate fob. Check that the recall has been carried out on the vehicle.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€322
Insurance€108
Maintenance€26
Depreciation€350
Total per month€806

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€322

Coupé V8 6.2 405 ch automatique version: combined consumption of 13.1 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

13.1 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €322

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Check that the ignition key recall (2010-2014) has been carried out: standard key with a separate fob.
  • When cold and then warm, listen to the engine (valve train knocking) and look for any misfire, a possible sign of faulty AFM lifters.
  • Ask for the service invoices and any lifter or camshaft replacements.
  • Convertible: check the operation of the roof and the absence of water ingress.
  • Check the vehicle’s European conformity (certificate of conformity, import or sale through a dealer network) and the cost of insurance.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the ignition key recall been carried out? Do you have proof?
  • Has the engine had misfires or repairs to the lifters or camshaft?
  • Is the vehicle of European origin, and what is its service history?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
