Our conclusion
The Yaris Cross wins on reliability (5/5 and no documented recurring fault, against 2/5 for the 2008 II and the serious faults of its PureTech and BlueHDi engines) and on safety (5 stars at Euro NCAP in 2021, against 4 for the 2008 in base trim). The 2008 has slightly more boot space (405 L against 397 L for the front-wheel-drive Yaris Cross) and a choice between petrol and diesel. Our advice: the Yaris Cross.
