Our conclusion
The Duster II is far more reassuring on mechanicals: no recurring fault documented in our sources (5/5), against 2/5 for the 2008 II and the serious faults of its 1.2 PureTech and 1.5 BlueHDi engines. The 2008 is better protected (4 stars at Euro NCAP in base trim, 5 with the optional safety pack, against 3 for the Duster). The Duster has a bigger boot (445 L against 405 L) and is available as a 4x4.
