Verdict

Good choice, check first

Compact people carrier with a 500 to 590 L boot, the only car in its category to earn 5 Euro NCAP stars in 2014. Used-car guides describe it as not very problematic, with two points to check: the dry-clutch DSG7 gearbox on petrol versions and oil consumption on some petrol engines. The diesels are praised for their longevity.

Known faults

Dry-clutch DSG7 gearbox (DQ200): jerking and clutch wear

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On the Sportsvan, the 7-speed DQ200 DSG gearbox with a dry clutch is fitted to the petrol engines and the 1.6 TDI. The guides cite jerky gear changes and delayed pulling away; a software update is sometimes enough, but replacing the clutch kit is often necessary. The clutch wears faster in urban traffic or when towing; an oil change is recommended at least every 60,000 km (Autodoc). Gebrauchtwagenberater notes, however, that the gearbox today causes few problems that are not caused by the driver.

Oil consumption of petrol engines

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Auto Bild reports occasional oil consumption on the Sportsvan's EA211 petrol engines; Autodoc also cites high oil consumption on the petrol versions, and reviews from Fiches-auto forum users place it as the first reported fault of the 1.4 TSI 150 (small sample). Check the oil level regularly.

EGR valve and particulate filter on the 1.6 TDI

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Gebrauchtwagenberater and Autodoc cite the EGR valve and the particulate filter as sensitive points of the Sportsvan's 1.6 TDI. Gebrauchtwagenberater places diesel weaknesses mainly at high mileage or in very urban use.

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€108
Insurance€59
Maintenance€33
Depreciation€150
Total per month€350

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Maintenance: budget of a closely related model.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€108

1.6 TDI 110 version: combined consumption of 4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

4 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €108

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€59

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Depreciation€150

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • DSG7 (petrol): test when cold and in town; look for jerking when pulling away, jerky or delayed gear changes.
  • Ask for the DSG gearbox history: software updates, oil changes, clutch replacement.
  • Petrol engine: check the oil level when cold and ask about oil consumption between oil changes.
  • 1.6 TDI: ask how the car was used (short trips) and for the EGR / particulate filter history.
  • Check that the rear bench slides easily forwards and backwards and folds down properly.
  • Have a dealer check, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the DSG gearbox had a software update, an oil change or a clutch replacement? Do you have the invoices?
  • Does the petrol engine consume oil between oil changes?
  • How was the car used (town, short trips, towing)?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
