Verdict
Compact SUV sold in France mainly with the 2.0 e-XDi diesel: 175 hp (manual or automatic gearbox), then 149 hp after the 2013 facelift. Sources agree on EGR valve clogging and injector wear, and isolated testimonies report faults with the 6-speed automatic gearbox. The 5-star Euro NCAP rating from 2019 applies to the next generation, not to this model.

Known faults
Clogged EGR valve and worn injectors (2.0 e-XDi)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyFor the 2.0 e-XDi diesel, sources cite the EGR valve (carbon deposits) and the injectors as weak points, along with turbo and power loss: Autodoc places these problems between 100,000 and 120,000 km. Carverif gives, for guidance only, 150 to 250 € for an EGR valve cleaning and 300 to 450 € for an injector. An expert forum thread also mentions an injector leak letting diesel dilute the engine oil on a 2011 Korando. The figures do not come from manufacturer statistics.

Faulty 6-speed automatic gearbox
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOwners of Korando C200 models with automatic gearbox describe hesitation, switching to limp mode, and a gearbox judged to need rebuilding; one of them cites an invoice of about 7,300 dollars (Australian testimony). Autodoc places the first symptoms between 60,000 and 80,000 km on models from 2012 onward. These are mostly individual testimonies, not a recall campaign.

Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Have the fault codes read and ask for invoices for the cleaning or replacement of the EGR valve and injectors.
- Try the engine cold and warm: uneven idling, loss of power, engine warning light or abnormal smoke should be watched for.
- Automatic gearbox: long test drive, warm, checking gear changes, hesitation and limp mode.
- Check the service book (oil change, diesel filter) and past use: according to some sources, short trips encourage EGR and particulate filter clogging.
- Check parts availability: one owner reports they are hard to find outside the SsangYong network.
Questions to ask the seller
- Have the EGR valve or the injectors already been cleaned or replaced? Do you have the invoices?
- How was the car used (short or long trips) and what is its service history?
- For the automatic gearbox: has it shown hesitation or switched to limp mode?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
