Verdict
Family SUV seating up to 7, rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2017. Carverif judges it worth buying under conditions (6.5/10): points to watch are the DSG7 gearbox jerks, the emissions system of the 2.0 TDI diesels (AdBlue, EGR, particulate filter) and the safety recalls (driver airbag, brake pedal), to be checked by serial number.

Known faults
DSG gearbox jerks and failure
Severity 2/3 · CostlyThe DSG dual-clutch gearbox is the most cited fault on the Kodiaq: jerks when pulling away, hesitation at low speed and, more seriously, mechatronics failure that can switch the car into limp mode. Carverif mentions a dual-clutch repair at around 2,000 euros; Au7o gives a range of 0 to 2,500 dollars for hesitation (Škoda software updates) and 1,800 to 4,000 dollars for mechatronics; a British specialist cites 1,200 to 2,700 pounds in quotes. Check the gearbox's maintenance history.

Emissions of the 2.0 TDI diesels (AdBlue, EGR, particulate filter)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyCarverif places the AdBlue/EGR/particulate filter system of the 2.0 TDI among the points to verify before buying. Au7o links short urban trips to incomplete particulate filter regeneration and warning lights, and describes the SCR/AdBlue system (pump, injector, NOx sensors) as complex. A Swedish guide cites the AdBlue NOx sensor as a recurring and costly fault around 100,000 km. Test drive the car to make sure no AdBlue, EGR or particulate filter warning light is on.

Recall: faulty driver airbag gas generator (Takata)
Manufacturer recallTwo European alerts concern Kodiaqs built between May or June 2016 and December 2017: the propellant of the driver airbag can degrade over time and, on deployment, fragments of the inflator can injure the occupants (recalls 69DU in 2023 and 69PC in 2026). Carverif refers to the Takata airbag campaigns. To be checked by serial number at a Škoda dealer.

Recall: poorly welded brake pedal bracket (2020 cars)
Manufacturer recallInsufficient welding of the brake pedal bracket can deform or detach it during hard braking, reducing braking efficiency. The recall (code 46i5) concerns Kodiaqs and Karoqs built from 29 June to 31 August 2020, including, according to the Czech press, models with automatic gearboxes from 2020.

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- Consumption taken from a published range (depends on trim and tyres).
- Consumption of a closely related generation or version, as none is published for this one.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€155

Things to check
- Have the driver airbag (Takata) and brake pedal recalls checked by serial number, and require proof that they were carried out.
- DSG: test cold and in manoeuvres; refuse a car that shudders, hesitates at low speed or shows a gearbox fault, and ask whether software updates have been carried out.
- 2.0 TDI diesel: make sure no AdBlue, EGR or particulate filter warning light is on, and ask what kind of use the car has had (short trips or motorway).
- 4x4: have the operation and maintenance of the Haldex clutch checked.
- If the car has a panoramic roof, check that the roof drain channels are not blocked.
- Require the complete service book and maintenance invoices, including DSG gearbox oil.
Questions to ask the seller
- Have the driver airbag and brake pedal recalls been carried out at Škoda? Do you have the proof?
- Has the DSG gearbox been oil-changed, updated or repaired, and do you have the invoices?
- For a diesel: has an AdBlue, EGR or particulate filter warning light ever come on, and what use has the car had?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip
Check the history
Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.
Read fault codes
An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
Parts and maintenance
Compare prices of parts for the Škoda Kodiaq I (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.
Insure the car

Frequently asked questions
What is the boot capacity of the Skoda Kodiaq?
Around 720 litres up to 2,065 litres with the seats folded, according to Motor1; with the third row in place (7 seats), La Tribune Auto gives 270 litres. Figures vary between sources and configurations.
Is the Skoda Kodiaq safe?
It obtained five stars at Euro NCAP in May 2017, with 92% for adult protection according to Škoda. Recalls nevertheless exist (Takata driver airbag on 2016-2017 cars, brake pedal on some 2020 examples): have them checked by serial number.
Is the used Skoda Kodiaq reliable?
Under conditions: Carverif gives it 6.5/10 and judges it worth buying with a verified history, pointing to the DSG7, the AdBlue/EGR/particulate filter of the 2.0 TDI diesels, and unresolved safety recalls.
