Verdict
City car that is well protected (5 stars Euro NCAP in 2014) and very practical in the Combi estate version (530 L of boot versus 330 L for the saloon). The documented weak points are concentrated on the 1.4 TDI (water pump) and the DSG7 dry-clutch gearbox; petrol versions with a manual gearbox are the most trouble-free. A driver airbag recall targeted examples built in early 2018: check by serial number.

Known faults
Fragile water pump (1.4 TDI)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyCaradisiac presents the water pump as the major recurring weakness of the 1.4 TDI three-cylinder, whatever its power output, sometimes needing replacement very regularly. Carverif rates it 4/10, and the Car Reliability Report advises against this engine, which is noisy and prone to costly faults (water pump, particulate filter).

DSG7 dry-clutch gearbox: jerks, mechatronics, clutches
Severity 2/3 · CostlyThe DSG7 (DQ200) is described as the weak point of the transmission: shuddering and jerks at low speed (Autofixfair), and mechatronics failure (codes P17BF, P189E) on the 1.2 TSI 110 DSG7 (Scanicar). Caradisiac only mentions cases of mechatronics or clutch actuator problems that have become very rare. Autocar advises testing for hesitation when pulling away.

Driver airbag recall (examples from early 2018)
Manufacturer recallA recall targeted Fabias built between 8 January and 28 February 2018, whose driver airbag could fail to inflate fast enough; the remedy is replacing the steering wheel/airbag. It covers 393 cars according to British sources; the scope in France can be checked by serial number at a Škoda dealer.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

| Fuel or electricity | €121 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €94 |
| Maintenance | €29 |
| Depreciation | €122 |
| Total per month | €366 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€121
1.0 MPI 75 version: combined consumption of 4.9 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
4.9 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €121

Things to check
- Check by serial number at a Škoda dealer that the driver airbag recall (early 2018 examples) has been carried out if the car is affected.
- 1.4 TDI: ask whether the water pump has been replaced, check the level and look for any coolant leaks.
- DSG7: extended test drive in dense traffic to detect shuddering, hesitation when pulling away and gearbox warning lights.
- Ask for the maintenance invoices (oil changes, and DSG gearbox oil change if fitted).
- Check the multimedia screen and the electric controls before buying.
Questions to ask the seller
- When was the water pump (1.4 TDI) last replaced, and at what mileage?
- Has the DSG gearbox had any work done (mechatronics, clutches, oil change)?
- Has the driver airbag recall been checked or carried out at Škoda?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip
Check the history
Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.
Read fault codes
An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
Parts and maintenance
Compare prices of parts for the Škoda Fabia III (timing, brakes, filters) to estimate the repairs to plan for.
