Verdict

Extra caution

Seven-seat SUV with a 702 L boot, which carries over the 5 stars at Euro NCAP of the 3008 II tested in 2016. The 1.2 PureTech (wet belt, oil consumption) and the 1.5 BlueHDi (timing chain, recall) have documented serious faults, and BlueHDi diesels are exposed to AdBlue tank failure: service history and recalls must be checked before buying.

Known faults

Degraded “wet” timing belt (1.2 PureTech)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.2 PureTech, the timing belt runs in oil and can disintegrate. Its debris clogs the oil strainer, causing oil pressure to drop, which can destroy the engine. Stellantis extended the belt warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, subject to servicing conditions, and introduced a new-generation belt in June 2022.

Premature wear of the timing chain (1.5 BlueHDi)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5), the 7 mm camshaft chain can wear prematurely because of oil carbonisation; the first sign is a rattle on cold start. A break causes the engine to stop suddenly. Engines built from 2017 to early 2023, including those in the 5008 II, are subject to a recall (inspection, software update and, if needed, a reinforced 8 mm chain) and a warranty extended to 10 years or 240,000 km.

Oil consumption (1.2 PureTech)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The 1.2 PureTech can consume a lot of oil, up to engine failure if the level is not monitored. Stellantis (Citroën UK) attributes this fault to piston ring segmentation on engines built from April 2014 to July 2018, then to the oil separator on those built from February 2018 to February 2023; it is covered by the warranty extension subject to servicing conditions. Owners of 5008 II PureTech 130s report 0.3 to 1 litre per 1,000 km beyond 75,000 to 100,000 km.

Faulty AdBlue tank (BlueHDi diesels)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On BlueHDi diesels, the AdBlue tank (with integrated pump, sensor or control unit) can fail: a warning message announces that the car will not start after a certain mileage, and the complete tank must be replaced. Owners of 5008 II diesels report this fault, to the point of the car being off the road. Peugeot partly covers the fault, on a case-by-case basis.

Manufacturer recalls

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€146

BlueHDi 120 EAT6 version: combined consumption of 5.4 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

5.4 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €146

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€74

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Insist on service invoices: oil changes at the correct interval with the recommended oil, and belt checks (PureTech).
  • Check the oil level when cold and ask whether topping up is needed between oil changes.
  • Ask a Peugeot dealer, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out and whether the car is eligible for warranty extensions.
  • 1.5 BlueHDi diesel: listen to the cold start; a rattle can indicate a slack chain.
  • Diesel: check there is no AdBlue or emissions message and ask whether the AdBlue tank has been replaced.
  • 5008s built from 19 March 2018 to 6 February 2019: have the spare-wheel bracket recall (code JRV) checked.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have all the service invoices, with the oil references used?
  • Has the timing belt (or the chain on the 1.5 diesel) been checked or replaced?
  • Has the AdBlue tank already been replaced (diesel)?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Euro NCAP rating for the Peugeot 5008 II?

5 stars: Euro NCAP applies the 3008 II's result to the 5008, which was tested in 2016 and published in March 2017. This rating is dated and does not predict the result under current, stricter protocols.

Which engine should I choose on a used 5008 II?

The 1.2 PureTech (wet belt, oil consumption) and the 1.5 BlueHDi (timing chain) have documented serious faults: insist on complete servicing and proof of the recalls. Our sources report no timing fault on the 1.6 BlueHDi 120 and 2.0 BlueHDi diesels, but their AdBlue tank can fail. CarVerif rates the 5008 II acceptable “subject to conditions”.

What is the boot capacity of the 5008 II?

702 litres claimed, for a 4.64 m long seven-seater.
