Extra caution

Cousin of the Peugeot 208 II, the Corsa F shares its documented faults: timing belt and oil consumption on the 1.2 petrol, timing chain on the 1.5 diesel, on-board charger and software recalls on the electric Corsa-e. Only buy with complete, invoiced servicing, and have the recalls and the PureTech warranty extension checked by an Opel dealer.

Known faults

Degraded “wet” timing belt (1.2 PureTech)

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.2 PureTech, the timing belt runs in oil and can disintegrate. Its debris clogs the oil strainer, causing oil pressure to drop, which can destroy the engine. Stellantis extended the belt warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, subject to servicing conditions, and introduced a new-generation belt in June 2022.

Oil consumption (1.2 PureTech)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Besides belt wear, the 1.2 PureTech is known for high oil consumption, which can cause engine damage if the level is not monitored. According to Caradisiac, engines built from 2023 onwards are no longer affected.

Premature wear of the timing chain (1.5 BlueHDi)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5), the timing chain can stretch prematurely because of oil carbonisation; the first sign is a rattle on cold start. A break can damage the engine. Vehicles built between 6 December 2017 and 31 January 2023 are subject to a recall.

On-board charger failure (AC charging impossible)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On Stellantis electric vehicles, including the Corsa-e, the on-board charger supplied by Mahle can block charging on a wallbox or socket (AC); “battery charge fault” messages appear during or just after charging. Stellantis acknowledged the risk, tries software updates before replacing the charger, and only changed supplier in 2024, according to NewMobility.

Loss of propulsion linked to the high-voltage battery software (recalls)

Manufacturer recall

Opel recalled Corsa cars with high-voltage batteries built in 2022 (and up to early 2023): an incorrect configuration of the battery control unit can cause a loss of propulsion while driving, or prevent the car from switching to “Ready” mode. The fix is a software update at the workshop.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask for service invoices: oil changes at the correct interval with the recommended oil, and documented belt checks or replacement (1.2 petrol).
  • Check the oil level when cold and listen to the timing: an abnormal noise is a warning sign.
  • Have an Opel dealer check, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out and whether the PureTech warranty extension applies.
  • 1.5 diesel: listen to the cold start; a rattle can indicate a slack chain.
  • Corsa-e: test AC charging on a wallbox and DC fast charging, and check that the car properly switches to “Ready”.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Do you have all the service invoices, with the oil references used?
  • Has the timing belt (or the chain on the diesel) been checked or replaced?
  • Have the recalls and software updates been carried out at Opel? Has the on-board charger already been replaced (Corsa-e)?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Euro NCAP rating for the Opel Corsa F?

4 stars in 2019, like the Peugeot 208 it shares its platform with: it lacked only one percentage point for driver assistance to earn five. Euro NCAP later extended this rating to the electric Corsa-e.

Does the PureTech engine warranty extension apply to the Corsa?

Yes: since March 2024, Citroën, DS, Opel and Peugeot cover the 1.2 PureTech belt and oil consumption for up to 10 years or 175,000 km, provided the manufacturer's service plan has been followed. Diagnosis and repair must be carried out within the approved network.

What is the boot capacity of the Corsa F?

309 litres in the petrol version, up to 1,081 litres with the rear seats folded. For the Corsa-e, sources differ: 267 litres for several of them, 309 litres according to L'argus.
