Verdict
Family SUV rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP (2012, renewed in 2013 for the plug-in hybrid version), offered in petrol, 2.2 DI-D diesel and plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The points to watch are the 12 V service battery and the condition of the traction battery on the PHEV, the diesel's particulate filter, and the software recall for autonomous emergency braking on 2017-2020 cars.

Known faults
Clogged particulate filter (2.2 DI-D)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOn the 2.2 DI-D diesel, short journeys prevent the particulate filter from regenerating, which clogs it (CarChecker). Code P2463 (filter restriction) is documented for 2012-2021 Outlander 2.2 DI-D models (Go-Parts). Prefer a car that has been driven on the road and whose servicing is documented.

12 V service battery discharging (PHEV)
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingThe PHEV's small 12 V battery discharges when the car stays immobilised; CarChecker suggests replacing it every two to three years, especially after more than a week parked. Owners report dead 12 V batteries on the My Outlander PHEV forum.

Loss of capacity of the traction battery (PHEV)
Severity 1/3 · Annoying2014-2016 PHEVs are described with a battery that has dropped to 65-75% of its state of health after five to six years (CarChecker). Cararac and a thread on the AEVA forum also address the degradation of this battery. Have the battery's state of health measured before buying.

Emergency braking triggered in error (software recall)
Manufacturer recallRecall in France: the software of the anti-collision system's camera can misread images and report a collision that does not exist, which triggers emergency braking and exposes following vehicles (L'argus). The affected Outlanders are 2017 to 2020 model years (L'argus, CarNews France); the fix is a reprogramming of about twenty minutes at a workshop. Have it checked with the serial number at a Mitsubishi dealer.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Manufacturer recalls
See the official list on RappelConso (new tab) (French government recall site: category “Automobiles et moyens de déplacement”, search “Mitsubishi Outlander”). A dealer for the brand can also check, using the vehicle identification number (VIN), that recalls have been carried out.

Inspection checklist
Mitsubishi Outlander III — inspection checklist
Things to check
- Ask a Mitsubishi dealer, using the serial number, whether the emergency braking recall (2017-2020 model years) has been carried out.
- PHEV: have the traction battery's state of health measured and test the 12 V battery (charge it and check that the charging flap opens).
- PHEV: check that both charging cables are present and that the car charges correctly.
- Diesel: ask for the servicing invoices (oil, particulate filter) and check there is no engine warning light or loss of power.
- 30-minute road test: transmission noises, behaviour of the automatic gearbox, emergency braking test if fitted.
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the emergency braking software recall been carried out at Mitsubishi (with proof)?
- PHEV: what is the state of health of the traction battery, and has the 12 V battery already been changed?
- Diesel: what was it mainly used for (town or road), and has the particulate filter already been treated?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Mitsubishi Outlander III safe?
It received five stars at Euro NCAP in 2012 (94% adults, 83% children, 64% pedestrians, 100% driver assistance according to La Tribune Auto), and five stars again in 2013 for the plug-in hybrid version (Mitsubishi). However, a software recall for emergency braking concerns the 2017-2020 model years (L'argus).
What is the electric range of the Outlander PHEV?
Mitsubishi announces 45 km WLTP for the 2019 model year, when the battery increased from 12 to 13.8 kWh (Electrek).
What is the boot capacity of the Outlander PHEV?
463 litres according to Caradisiac, a volume considered small for the category. Combustion versions with five seats show other figures in their data sheets (477 litres on the 2017 Caradisiac data sheet for the 2.2 DI-D).
