Verdict
A premium SUV rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2017, with a 558-litre boot and an 8-speed automatic gearbox across the range. Used, the 2.0 Ingenium 4-cylinder diesels (D180, D240) are regularly reported for timing chain problems, and the Touch Pro Duo screen as well as the air suspension lead to faults: service history and an independent inspection are essential.

Known faults
Timing chain and oil dilution (2.0 Ingenium diesel)
Severity 3/3 · SeriousSeveral specialist workshops describe wear of the timing chain on 2.0 Ingenium diesels (D180, D240), linked to oil diluted by diesel during interrupted particulate filter regenerations, especially on short journeys. The first sign: a rattle on cold start. If left unaddressed, the chain can jump or break and cause engine failure. The years 2017-2018 are the most cited. These sources are workshops and forums, not Jaguar Land Rover.

Air suspension fault
Severity 2/3 · CostlyVelar owners report suspension fault messages (compressor, leaks, height sensors), sometimes with the car stuck at normal or low ride height. In one case the fault disabled automatic emergency braking. The sources are owner forums and a workshop website.

Touch Pro Duo screen freezing
Severity 1/3 · AnnoyingOwners report screen freezes, slowdowns and black screens on the Touch Pro Duo system, especially on 2017-2019 cars with older software. The air conditioning controls run through the screen, so a freeze makes them unusable. A screen reset or a software update often solves the problem.

Inspection checklist
Land Rover Range Rover Velar I — inspection checklist
Things to check
- 2.0 diesel: listen to the cold start (a rattle lasting more than two seconds is a warning sign) and ask for the oil change history.
- Ask a Land Rover dealer to check the serial number for current recalls and campaigns.
- Test the air suspension: change the ride height, check there is no fault message and that the car does not sag when stationary.
- Use the Touch Pro Duo screen at length (air conditioning, navigation, camera) to spot freezes and black screens.
- P400e hybrid: check the charging cable and the actual electric range.
- Have an independent inspection by a Land Rover specialist before buying.
Questions to ask the seller
- At what intervals have the oil changes been carried out, and do you have the invoices?
- Has the air suspension or the multimedia system already been repaired or updated?
- What type of journeys has the car done (short city trips or long distances)?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions
What Euro NCAP rating did the Range Rover Velar get?
Five stars in October 2017, with 93% for adult protection, 85% for child protection, 74% for pedestrian protection and 72% for driver assistance (Auto Express).
Which Velar engines should be avoided on the used market?
Used-car guides and workshops mainly cite the 2.0 Ingenium diesels (D180, D240) from 2017-2018, because of the timing chain. Several guides consider the petrol versions less risky, but these opinions differ.
What is the boot capacity of the Velar?
558 litres with the rear seat in place and 1,731 litres with the rear seat folded according to Parkers, but Carwow gives 568 and 1,374 litres: check the specifications of the version concerned. The plug-in hybrid version loses around 50 litres according to Carwow.
