Verdict

Buy with care

Very well-protected 4x4 SUV (5 stars for adult protection at Euro NCAP in 2007) with a large boot. Guides rate it less reliable than its image suggests, especially the 2006-2010 models: the Haldex clutch and the rear differential need regular servicing and can be expensive. The 2.2 diesel is presented as the safest choice.

Known faults

Haldex clutch (all-wheel drive)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The Haldex electromagnetic coupling deteriorates prematurely on 2006-2010 models (especially 2007-2008); contaminated fluid damages the internal components. It must be changed regularly (CarGurus recommends at least every 30,000 miles). Warning sign: whistling or whining under acceleration. Repairs often exceed £2,000 according to a British guide, with no official recall.

Rear differential bearings

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The rear differential bearings wear out (2007-2011 models according to an analysis by Bell Engineering relayed on a forum), and low oil level accelerates the damage, with a characteristic whine (Au7o). Car Checker also lists rear differential bearing wear among the main points of the TD4.

Clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF) in urban use

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The 2.2 diesel's particulate filter clogs on short journeys: regeneration requires a hot engine and steady driving (around 60 to 112 km/h) for 10 to 20 minutes. Car Checker advises against the car for mainly urban use.

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€181
Insurance€51
Maintenance€39
Depreciation€88
Total per month€359

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (diesel)€181

TD4 150 manuelle version: combined consumption of 6.7 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

6.7 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €181

Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€51

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Depreciation€88

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask for invoices for the Haldex and rear differential oil changes; without proof, negotiate or walk away.
  • Road test: listen for any whistling or whining from the rear under acceleration.
  • Prefer a post-2010 example: guides rate the 2006-2010 models the least reliable.
  • Diesel: check the usage history (short journeys) and that the DPF warning light is off.
  • If you mainly drive in town, consider the eD4 front-wheel-drive version, which has neither Haldex nor a rear differential.

Questions to ask the seller

  • When were the Haldex and rear differential oils last changed, and do you have the invoices?
  • Was the car mainly driven in town or on the road?
  • Has the particulate filter already been cleaned or replaced?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
