Verdict
Rear-wheel-drive luxury saloon with a 520-litre boot, never tested by Euro NCAP. The points to watch are the rear air suspension, the timing of the early 5.0 V8s, EGR and DPF clogging on the diesel, and the panoramic sunroof: have the service history checked before buying.

Known faults
Timing chain and tensioners of the 5.0 V8
Severity 3/3 · SeriousOn the 5.0 V8 (AJ133), the steel piston of the tensioner wears the aluminium chain guide: the chain loses tension and rattles on cold start, with a risk of the chain jumping in extreme cases (JLR Engines Blog). Owners consider 5.0s built before 2014 the most exposed, and Jaguar reportedly revised the tensioner and guide in March 2014 (UseCarScout). A similar noise can come from the compressor insulation housing on supercharged versions: have the source of the noise confirmed.

Rear air suspension (springs and compressor)
Severity 2/3 · CostlyThe XJ X351 has air springs at the rear only. Typical faults are leaking bellows and a worn compressor, with a rear end that sags (CarChecker). Buying guides advise checking that the car stays level (UseCarScout).

EGR and particulate filter clogging on the V6 diesel
Severity 2/3 · CostlyOn the 3.0 diesel, clogging of the EGR valve and the DPF is a check point cited when buying (XF Forum); EGR or turbo problems can make DPF regeneration ineffective, up to filter saturation (EURO FAP).

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €170 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €97 |
| Maintenance | €41 |
| Depreciation | €215 |
| Total per month | €523 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (diesel)€170
3.0 V6 Diesel 275 version: combined consumption of 6.3 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.347 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
6.3 × 1.15 × 2.347 € × 10 = €170
Diesel price: French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€97
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€41
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€215
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Check that the car sits level, including after a night standing (rear air suspension), and listen to the compressor.
- 5.0 V8: listen to the cold start for a chain rattle and ask for timing service invoices; be wary of pre-2014 cars with no work recorded.
- Diesel: read the fault codes, check the condition of the EGR valve and the DPF, and find out what kind of journeys the car has done.
- Examine the panoramic sunroof: noises, creaks, signs of corrosion on the rails.
- Check the level and replacement frequency of the gearbox and axle oil (Jaguar recommends it for "life").
- Check the complete service history and the condition of the battery and infotainment.
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the rear air suspension already been repaired? Do you have the invoices?
- For a V8: has the timing (tensioners and guides) been replaced, and when?
- What is the full service history (engine oil, gearbox, axle), and how often was the car used for journeys?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Check the history
Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.
Read fault codes
An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
