Verdict

Good choice, check first

Well-protected family hatchback (5 Euro NCAP stars in 2017) with a 395-litre boot in the five-door and 602 litres in the estate. The main point to watch is recall 21DC03 (tandem pump, risk of oil supply failure and loss of brake assistance) on i30s built from late 2018 to 2020. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is also reported to jerk; test it at length.

Jerking and hesitation of the DCT7 dual-clutch gearbox

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Several sites describe jerking when pulling away and hesitation from the i30's seven-speed DCT gearbox, mainly on the 1.4 T-GDi versions (between 40,000 and 80,000 km according to Autodoc, an approximate value) and on 2018-2020 cars according to AutoPartsPro. No official recall has been found for the 1.4.

Recall 21DC03: oil supply and brake assistance failure (tandem pump)

Manufacturer recall

Hyundai recalled PD i30s built between late 2018 and 2020 (dates vary by source: from 23 or 25 October 2018 to mid or late 2020): the pre-filter of the tandem pump can become blocked, which can interrupt the oil supply, damage the engine and cause a loss of brake assistance. The Auto Motor und Sport article cites the 1.6 litre i30s; we were unable to confirm the exact list of versions. The work is carried out by the dealer. Check with Hyundai, using the serial number, that the recall has been carried out.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Ask a Hyundai dealer, using the serial number, whether recall 21DC03 applies and has been carried out (cars built from late 2018 to 2020).
  • DCT7 gearbox: test drive with repeated slow starts and low-speed manoeuvres to detect jerking or hesitation.
  • Ask for the service history of the DCT gearbox (oil changes and software updates).
  • Check the air conditioning, the multimedia screen and the stop-start system work.
  • Check the wear on the tyres and front brake pads before buying.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has recall 21DC03 been carried out at Hyundai, with proof?
  • Has the automatic gearbox ever needed work or shown a warning light?
  • Do you have the complete service invoices?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
