Verdict

Good choice, check first

Small, simple petrol city car, considered reliable by What Car? (faults mainly electronic and minor). Weak points: only 3 stars at Euro NCAP (December 2020) and two safety recalls (seatbelt pretensioners on vehicles built in September-October 2020, fuel pump on those built from November 2021 to April 2023) to be checked with Hyundai before buying.

Known faults

Minor electronic faults (warning lights, multimedia)

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

What Car? notes that the most common faults on the i10 since 2020 concern the electrics: spurious warning lights and a temperamental multimedia screen, with no effect on driving. ClickMechanic also cites malfunctions of the multimedia system, abnormal warning lights and battery drain making starting difficult.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the VIN checked at a Hyundai dealer: fuel pump recall (built November 2021 to April 2023) and seatbelt pretensioner recall (September-October 2020).
  • Check the number of seats shown on the registration document (4 or 5 depending on trim) and the rear bench.
  • Test the multimedia screen and the dashboard warning lights; check the condition of the battery and starting.
  • Automated manual gearbox: test drive in town to spot jerking or hesitation when changing gear.
  • Check the service book and the invoices.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the fuel pump and seatbelt pretensioner recalls been carried out? Do you have proof?
  • Have any electronic problems (multimedia, warning lights, battery) been dealt with?
  • How many seats are shown on the registration document?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
