Verdict

Buy with care

Supermini rated 5 Euro NCAP stars in 2017, with a 292 L boot. The weak point is the 1.0 EcoBoost, the most common engine: its belt, which runs in oil (timing or oil pump belt depending on the version), can degrade and clog the oil pickup, and its cooling circuit is prone to leaks. A 1.0 EcoBoost should only be bought with a complete service history.

Known faults

Wet belt of the 1.0 EcoBoost

Severity 3/3 · Serious

On the 1.0 EcoBoost, a belt (timing or oil pump belt depending on the version) runs in oil. As it degrades, it can release debris that clogs the oil pump pickup and causes oil pressure to drop, risking engine failure. An owner of a 2018 Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost reports a belt that slipped and clogged the pickup at 140,000 km. Reliability guides advise requiring the invoices for servicing and belt replacement, and checking the oil level often.

Cooling circuit leaks on the 1.0 EcoBoost

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The 1.0 EcoBoost is prone to coolant leaks: a fragile hose, a cracked water housing or expansion tank. The circuit can empty fairly quickly without warning, and the resulting overheating can damage the cylinder head and head gasket. A falling coolant level is the sign to watch for.

Manufacturer recalls

Real monthly cost

Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€116
Insurance€101
Maintenance€28
Depreciation€100
Total per month€345

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€116

1.1 85 version: combined consumption of 4.7 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

4.7 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €116

Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.

Insurance€101

Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.

Depreciation€100

Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • On a 1.0 EcoBoost: require the book and service invoices, in particular the date and mileage of the last wet belt replacement.
  • Cold engine: check the oil level and condition, as well as the level in the expansion tank.
  • Look for signs of coolant leaks around the expansion tank, hoses and radiator.
  • During the test drive, watch the temperature gauge and make sure no oil pressure warning light appears.
  • Have a Ford dealership check, using the serial number, that all recalls have been carried out.

Questions to ask the seller

  • When and at what mileage was the wet belt replaced? Do you have the invoice?
  • At what interval were the oil changes carried out, and with which oil?
  • Have you had to top up coolant or repair a leak?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions

What Euro NCAP rating does the Ford Fiesta VII have?

5 stars in 2017, with 87% for adult protection, 84% for children, 64% for pedestrians and 60% for safety assist. Autonomous emergency braking was only optional.

Should I avoid the 1.0 EcoBoost on a used Fiesta?

Not necessarily, but its belt running in oil (timing or oil pump belt depending on the version) is its weak point: as it degrades, it can clog the oil pickup and destroy the engine. A complete service history and a belt invoice are essential.

What is the boot capacity of the Fiesta VII?

292 litres, for 5 seats.
